How do I show up in Google AI Overviews in Malaysia?
EasyFound · · 7 min read
To show up in Google AI Overviews in Malaysia, your page must first be in Google Search: indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and not excluded from AI features in Search Console. Google says no special file or markup is needed. It also points to helpful pages of your own and an up-to-date Business Profile. This guide follows Google's published guidance; we haven't run our own AI Overview test yet.
To show up in Google AI Overviews in Malaysia, your page first has to be in Google Search itself: indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and not excluded from AI features in Search Console. Beyond that, Google says no special trick exists. What it asks for is helpful pages of your own and business details that are up to date.
This guide sets out Google's own published guidance as steps. EasyFound hasn't run its own AI Overview test yet, so nothing below is a measurement of ours.
Are Google AI Overviews available in Malaysia and in Malay?
Yes, Google AI Overviews are available in Malaysia and in Malay, according to Google's own help page. It lists them as available "to all users, in the following countries, territories and languages"1, and Malaysia is on that list. So are Malay, English, Tamil and Chinese.
Available doesn't mean every search gets one. Google says AI Overviews "are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger"2.
What does Google say gets a page into AI Overviews?
Google says a page gets into AI Overviews the same way it gets into Search: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary"2.
| What Google says | What to do |
|---|---|
| The page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet"2 | Check the page in Search Console's URL Inspection tool. Remove any nosnippet setting. |
| The site "must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console"3 | Open Settings, then Search generative AI. Include is the default4. |
| "Making sure that important content is available in textual form"2 | Type out your price list, menu and service areas. A poster image isn't text. |
| Content should show "first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge"5 | Write from jobs you have done, in your own words. |
| "Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date"2 | Update hours, category and services before each festive season. |
Three notes on the table:
- Content is the main lever. Google says unique, useful content "will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide"3. It contrasts this with generic "commodity content".
- Schema helps Google read you, but isn't a ticket in. Structured data gives "explicit clues about the meaning of a page"6, yet Google says it "isn't required for generative AI search"3. Our schema templates for Malaysian businesses cover the markup itself.
- Your name should be said one way. Google's advice is to "use your site name consistently across your home page"7. We learnt why first-hand, when Google's AI Overview mixed up our own brand with similar names.
For local businesses, Google adds that Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results"3.
What can I ignore when trying to show up in Google AI Overviews?
You can ignore most "AI hacks" for Google AI Overviews, according to Google itself. Its guide lists these as things site owners don't need for Google Search3:
- llms.txt and other AI files. Having one "will neither harm nor help", because "Google Search ignores them".
- Chopping pages into tiny pieces. "There's no ideal page length."
- Rewriting everything for AI. "You don't need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search."
- Chasing fake mentions. Seeking "inauthentic" mentions "isn't as helpful as it might seem".
The same guide tells readers to weigh third-party "AEO" or "GEO" advice against Google's official guidance. EasyFound sells this kind of service, so hold us to that too.
Which searches show a Google AI Overview?
Longer, question-style searches showed an AI Overview far more often in one public study we read in full. Pew Research Center tracked the Google searches of a panel of US adults in March 20258:
- About one search in five produced an AI summary.
- For one- or two-word searches, the share was 8%.
- For searches of ten words or more, it was 53%.
That is American data from last year, not Malaysian. Our reading: pages that answer a full customer question, such as "berapa harga servis aircond di Shah Alam", are the ones worth writing first.
What don't we know yet about Google AI Overviews in Malaysia?
- We haven't run our own AI Overview test. Our published tests ran on ChatGPT through OpenAI's API. Those findings may not carry over to Google.
- AI tools don't agree with each other. In our Malaysian test of Google's Gemini and ChatGPT, only about one business in ten was named by both tools. Gemini is not AI Overviews either.
- Google doesn't explain individual choices. Its pages say what makes a page eligible, not why one page was picked.
How do I get my Malaysian business into Google AI Overviews?
Getting into Google AI Overviews starts with being eligible, and every step here is free to do yourself.
- Request EasyFound's free AI visibility check. See what ChatGPT says about your business, then go through it with us on a free call.
- Confirm Google has your pages. Verify your site in Search Console and inspect your homepage and main service pages.
- Check the two switches. Look for a nosnippet or max-snippet setting in your SEO plugin, and confirm Search generative AI is set to Include.
- Turn posters into text. Prices, service areas, hours and languages spoken should be typed on the page.
- Write one page from experience for each question customers really ask, in the language they ask it.
- Update your Google Business Profile, including Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali hours.
- Search your customers' questions on Google, logged out, on different days. Note whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it links.
An AI Overview can also draw on several related searches, which we explain in what query fan-out means. EasyFound is a founder-led AI SEO service in the Klang Valley. We check six AI tools in English, Malay and Chinese. Start with the free check below.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Overview available in Malaysia?
Yes, according to Google. Its Search Help page lists Malaysia among the countries and territories where AI Overviews are available to all users, and lists Malay, English, Tamil and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese among the languages. The page doesn't promise an AI Overview on every search. Google's guidance for site owners says AI Overviews are shown only when its systems decide they add something to the normal results, so they often don't appear.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No, according to Google. Its guide to generative AI features in Search says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including its AI features, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt files. It also says structured data isn't required for generative AI search, though it is still worth using for rich results. Other AI tools may treat these files differently; this answer is about Google Search only.
Can I pay Google to put my business in the AI Overview?
Not as a cited source, going by Google's own pages. Its guidance for site owners describes no paid way to become a supporting link in an AI Overview, and its Search technical requirements page says it costs nothing to get a page into search results. Ads are separate. Google's Ads Help page says ads can show above, below or within AI Overviews, and lists Malaysia among the countries where ads within them are available, in English. Those come from Google Ads campaigns; buying one doesn't make your page a source the AI Overview links to.
How do I know if my website appeared in a Google AI Overview?
Use Google Search Console. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Performance report under the Web search type, and its July 2026 guide points site owners to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. You can also search your customers' questions on Google yourself, logged out, and look at the links beside the AI Overview. One search is only one result, so repeat it on different days.
Why is my business not showing in Google AI Overview even though I rank on Google?
Being in Google's results makes a page eligible, not chosen. Google says an AI Overview may run several related searches and pick supporting pages from all of them, and that meeting every requirement doesn't guarantee a page is shown. Check three things first: the search actually shows an AI Overview, your page has no nosnippet or max-snippet setting, and your site is set to Include under Search generative AI in Search Console. Google doesn't explain individual choices.
