Why does Google's AI Overview mix up my brand with other companies?

EasyFound · · 7 min read

TL;DR

Google's AI Overview mixes up your brand when your name alone could mean several things and the web says more about the others than about you. It happened to us: a search for our own name listed look-alikes and left us out. Pair your name with your trade and town everywhere it appears, and check what a search without that pairing shows.

Google's AI Overview mixes up your brand with other companies when your name on its own could mean several things, and the web says more about the others than about you. Instead of picking you, it lists the possibilities or asks the searcher which one they meant. It happened to us this week.

On 8 and 9 October 2026, we searched Google for our own name, "easyfound". The AI Overview listed several different products and companies with the same or a similar name, asked us to clarify, and didn't list our website at all (CSV).

What did Google's AI Overview show when we searched our own brand name?

Google's AI Overview for "easyfound" described other things, not EasyFound the Malaysian AI SEO service. As we noted them at the time, its possible meanings of the name included:

  • a concrete product for building foundations
  • a machine-vision software tool
  • a GPS tracker
  • a micro-lending app
  • a gaming platform
  • a warehouse-storage company

Then it asked which one we meant. Janice recalls seeing our website listed for this search before, but we didn't save those results. This time it wasn't, although our homepage is indexable, has "EasyFound" in its title, and carries WebSite and Organization structured data.

Why does Google's AI Overview mix up brands with similar names?

Google's AI Overview mixes up brands mainly because a bare name is an ambiguous question. Google doesn't explain individual AI Overview choices, so these causes are our reading of its documentation and our case:

  1. The name alone doesn't say which business. "Easy" and "found" are everyday words that several companies use. With no trade or town attached, asking the searcher to clarify is a reasonable answer.
  2. The others have more pages about them. For the site name it shows in results, Google uses "content from a site's home page and references to it that appear on the web"1. A young brand has few references; an older namesake may have years of them.
  3. AI Overviews search widely. Google says they may run several related searches for one question2 (see query fan-out), so pages about any namesake can end up in the answer.
  4. Your own pages may pair your name with the look-alikes. On 5 October we added a homepage FAQ saying we're not connected to a look-alike web address or a UK building product. Our unproven reading is that this put their names next to ours on our most important page, which may have added to the mix-up. We have since removed the line.

Google is open that this can go wrong: "AI Overviews can and will make mistakes"3.

Does ChatGPT mix up my brand the same way as Google's AI Overview?

ChatGPT mixed up our brand on some questions and not others. In our 5 October check through OpenAI's API, it answered who we are correctly every time, but mostly lost questions about whether we can be trusted.

Which EasyFound ChatGPT described, by type of question (EasyFound check via OpenAI's API, 5 October 2026, two answers per question; CSV)
Type of question Answers that described our business correctly
Who we are: what it is, pricing, languages 8 of 8
Trust: is it legit, reviews, should I trust it 1 of 6
How it works 0 of 2

The trust answers cited no independent reviews of us. Instead they leaned on review pages for near-name companies and a scam-check rating for a look-alike web address that isn't ours. How ChatGPT separates same-name local businesses is covered in how ChatGPT knows who your business is.

Does adding my trade or town to the search stop the brand mix-up?

In our ChatGPT check, adding a place to the question dropped the look-alikes from the answer. Asked the bare "what is EasyFound", one of two answers also listed look-alikes "if you meant a different EasyFound". Asked "What is EasyFound Malaysia?", both answers described us and cited only our site.

Google's own help page tells searchers to "ask multiple versions of your question to get the best answers"3. But you can't make customers type your town. You can make your name and trade travel together on every page that mentions you.

What can't our check tell me about Google's AI Overview and brand mix-ups?

  • Why Google chose these look-alikes. We saw one AI Overview on two days, by hand. We have no way to query AI Overviews in bulk, and Google doesn't explain its choices.
  • Whether our FAQ line caused it. We have no before-and-after test, so treat it as a lead, not a finding.
  • How common this is. It's one brand. A name made of everyday words is probably more exposed than a made-up one.

How do I stop Google's AI Overview mixing up my brand with other companies?

Stop the mix-up by making your business unmistakable: the same name, trade and town, said the same way, everywhere Google and ChatGPT read.

  1. Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says when customers ask about your business by name, including whether it mixes you up with someone else, then go through it with us on a free call.
  2. Search your own name twice, logged out: once bare, once with your trade or town. If only the second finds you, your name needs company on the web.
  3. Put one plain sentence high on your homepage saying who you are, what you do and where, such as "Kedai Roti A is a halal bakery in Shah Alam." Use the same wording on your profiles.
  4. Add WebSite and Organization structured data to your homepage, with your official profiles under sameAs4. Google says a site name should be "unique, concise, non-generic, and consistent with home page content"1. It isn't a switch: ours was already in place.
  5. Complete your Google Business Profile in your real-world name. If customers don't visit you, Google says to hide your address and set a service area5.
  6. Earn mentions that pair your name with your trade: a directory listing, a supplier page, a local news piece. Keep look-alike brands off your own pages unless customers really are confused.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Google show other companies when I search my business name?

Google's AI Overview can show other companies for your business name when the name on its own could mean several things. Google says AI Overviews may run several related searches to build an answer, so they can draw on pages about any business with that name. When we searched Google for our own name, easyfound, on 8 and 9 October 2026, the AI Overview listed several other products and companies with the same or a similar name, asked the searcher to say which one they meant, and didn't list our website.

Can I ask Google to fix an AI Overview that confuses my business with another company?

Not directly, as far as we found. Google doesn't publish why an individual AI Overview picked its sources, and its AI features page says there are no special optimisations needed to appear. What you can change is what Google reads: your homepage, your WebSite and Organization structured data, your Google Business Profile and the other pages that mention you. Google's help page also asks searchers to send feedback when an AI Overview doesn't look right.

Does ChatGPT also confuse my business with companies that have a similar name?

It can, depending on the question. In EasyFound's 5 October 2026 check through OpenAI's API, ChatGPT described our business correctly in all eight answers to identity questions such as what EasyFound is or what it costs. But for questions about whether EasyFound is legit, has reviews or can be trusted, five of six answers mixed us up with other companies. Our reading is that it found few independent reviews of us to use.

Should I say on my website that I'm not connected to a company with a similar name?

Only if customers are genuinely confused, and then keep it off your homepage if you can. A sentence like 'we're not connected to X' puts the other company's name next to yours on your most important page. Our reading, which we haven't proven, is that a line like this on our own homepage may have fed Google's confusion between EasyFound and look-alike names. Describing yourself clearly, with your trade and town, tells search engines who you are without naming anyone else.

Our data: EasyFound, Which EasyFound do Google's AI Overview and ChatGPT describe?, October 2026. The Google AI Overview was seen in our own Google searches for "easyfound" on 8 and 9 October 2026 and recorded by hand. We have no way to query AI Overviews in bulk, so this is an observation, not a repeated measurement. The ChatGPT answers came from OpenAI's Responses API (gpt-5.4-mini, web search on, location Malaysia) on 5 October 2026: eight short questions about EasyFound, asked twice each, 16 answers, checked against easyfound.co. The questions were short keyword-style searches, not chatty prompts. Answers come from the API, not the ChatGPT app. Download the results (CSV). Other companies are described by type, not named.
