How do ChatGPT ads work for Malaysian businesses?

Malaysian businesses can buy ChatGPT ads directly through OpenAI's self-service Ads Manager, pay in ringgit, and bid for a labelled slot below ChatGPT's answers. Clinics, law firms and most financial firms generally can't advertise: OpenAI's rules bar most of those ads outside the US.

OpenAI lists a minimum daily budget of RM5.50 for ringgit accounts². Sign-up also asks for your country, currency and time zone, and those can't be changed later, so set them to Malaysia and ringgit from the start.

Can a Malaysian business advertise on ChatGPT yet?

Yes, a Malaysian business can advertise on ChatGPT through OpenAI's self-service Ads Manager. OpenAI's availability page lists Malaysia as "Available", and notes that "the legal entity that will advertise and be billed must be based in a country listed as available"¹. Ads began rolling out to Malaysian users on 24 September 2026, Malaysian time¹¹¹².

Ads show on Free and Go plans, not on Plus, Pro or Business, and OpenAI's help page also mentions ads in logged-out ChatGPT⁸. Why the plan split matters is in Can I pay to get cited by ChatGPT?

Two set-up rules catch people out:

• Country, currency and time zone are locked. OpenAI says these "cannot be changed after account creation"⁵. Pick Malaysia and MYR, and use your SSM-registered name as the Legal Name.
• New accounts may start at home. Some new self-serve accounts "can initially advertise only in their home country", until verification and some spend are done².

How much do ChatGPT ads cost a Malaysian business?

ChatGPT ads have no fixed price in Malaysia: OpenAI runs a "relevance-weighted, second-price auction", and you set a budget in ringgit³. Ads Manager's "Maximize results" strategy can set bids for you, or you can set a maximum bid yourself¹⁵. OpenAI publishes no rate card, and says it "does not yet have performance benchmarks"¹⁰.

Three budget details matter:

1. The daily budget is an average. On a single day OpenAI may spend up to twice it. Across the week, the total stays within seven days' worth⁴.
2. OpenAI's bid tip is in US dollars. It suggests starting a cost-per-click bid at "$3–$5 USD per click"³. With a fixed bid, your daily budget must be at least your highest bid⁴, so on fixed bidding your real minimum depends on your bid.
3. Tax and timing. OpenAI's fees exclude applicable taxes¹⁴. In some cases ads keep running for up to 24 hours after you pause, and that spend is billed¹³.

Which Malaysian businesses can't run ChatGPT ads?

Clinics, law firms and most financial businesses in Malaysia generally can't run ChatGPT ads today. OpenAI's ad policies say "Ads for health services outside the US are generally prohibited", and "Ads for legal services outside of the US are currently prohibited"⁷. Its eligibility table marks minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, hospitals and dietary supplements "Not allowed" outside the US⁶.

For a Malaysian dental or aesthetic clinic, that generally means no: dental services appear only on the health categories OpenAI may approve case by case in the US⁷. Financial products outside the US are mostly "Not allowed" or limited to a small group of approved advertisers. OpenAI also warns: "A registered or licensed business is not automatically eligible for every advertising category or market"⁶.

Other limits hit common Malaysian trades:

• Property agents can't advertise a specific home for sale or rent. An ad may link to a listings platform if it names no specific listing⁷.
• Alcohol ads are currently disallowed, as are wellness products making unproven health claims⁷.

What OpenAI does accept early on is consumer categories: "household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, and digital products and education"⁷. Our reading: an aircon servicing firm, bakery or tuition centre fits, subject to review.

Can I run ChatGPT ads in Malay or Chinese?

We found no list of supported ad languages, Malay and Chinese included, in OpenAI's ads help pages (checked 2 October 2026). OpenAI's help page says "An ad's language may differ from your conversation or interface language", and that selection "can consider location, language settings, and conversation language"⁸.

An opt-in setting can also auto-translate ad copy. If your customers buy in Malay or Chinese, our suggestion is a landing page in that language too.

What does my website need before a ChatGPT ad can run?

Your website's landing page has to be open to OpenAI's ad crawler, OAI-AdsBot, or the ChatGPT ad can't run. OpenAI says "You must allow OAI-AdsBot", and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot too⁹. Ads or landing pages its systems can't review "are not eligible to run"⁷. Firewalls, bot protection and CAPTCHAs can block it by mistake (how to check).

OpenAI also checks your business. Business verification "may take up to 7 Business days", and separately OpenAI can decline your domain if it can't match it to your advertiser identity⁶. Click tracking is covered in our after-the-click article.

How should a Malaysian business decide on ChatGPT ads?
