Can I pay to get cited by ChatGPT?

EasyFound · · 6 min read

TL;DR

No. OpenAI doesn't sell places inside ChatGPT's answers, and says ads don't influence them. You can buy a labelled ChatGPT ad below the answer, now rolling out in Malaysia for Free and Go users. Nobody can guarantee a citation; a clear, readable page that answers your customers' question is what gives ChatGPT something to cite.

No. You can't buy a place inside a ChatGPT answer from OpenAI. You can buy an ad that appears below the answer, labelled as sponsored, and ChatGPT ads are now rolling out in Malaysia. But OpenAI says "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers"1.

What money can and can't buy in ChatGPT, according to OpenAI (pages read 27–28 September 2026)
What you want Can you pay OpenAI for it? Where it comes from
An ad below a ChatGPT answer Yes, through OpenAI's Ads Manager Relevance and advertiser bids
Your name inside the answer No ChatGPT's answer, generated separately from ads
A link to your site as a source No Pages ChatGPT's search finds and ranks
A guarantee of either No Citations: "Placement is not guaranteed" (OpenAI). Ads: shown by relevance and bid

Can I advertise my business on ChatGPT from Malaysia?

Yes, most Malaysian businesses can advertise on ChatGPT, if their category is allowed under OpenAI's ad policies, which prohibit some categories and put others, such as health and finance, through stricter review. In September 2026, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Ads were rolling out in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, shown to eligible users on the Free and Go plans3. OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page listed Malaysia as available for self-service advertising when we checked2; the business that advertises and is billed has to be based in a listed country.

Ads started as a US test on 9 February 20261, and OpenAI describes the rollout to users as gradual, so check where your ad will actually run.

Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?

OpenAI says ChatGPT ads don't change what ChatGPT recommends. Its help page says ads "run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses"1. Ads "can appear below the end of a response" and are "clearly labeled as sponsored".

It also says ads are ranked on "relevance and advertiser bids", and that "seeing an ad doesn't mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser"1. An ad is an ad, not a recommendation.

Who would see a ChatGPT ad?

Ads are shown only on the Free and Go plans, and only to eligible users there. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't get ads, and neither do accounts identified as under 18 or Temporary Chats1. OpenAI says ads aren't eligible to appear near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health or politics.

Can anyone guarantee my business gets cited by ChatGPT?

No one can guarantee a citation. OpenAI says "Placement is not guaranteed"4, so treat any promise of guaranteed citations as a warning sign; at least one Malaysian package we checked advertised them anyway.

What you can do is give ChatGPT a clear, readable page to cite, and our tests suggest many local answers are still open:

  • The names change a lot from answer to answer. Just 6% of the businesses ChatGPT named appeared in all three runs of the same question, in our test of 135 answers.
  • When it searched, ChatGPT named businesses from pages in that search. Asked for a dentist in Petaling Jaya three times, it named 13 different clinics, each linked to a page from that search: a clinic's own site, a directory listing or a Google page.

For many local questions, no single business has a lasting hold on the answer yet. A page that answers the question plainly, in your trade and your area, gives ChatGPT something to cite.

Should I run ChatGPT ads, get cited, or both?

Ads and citations do different jobs, so many businesses will want both. An ad bids for a labelled slot below relevant answers, for as long as you pay. A citation puts your business inside the answer, when ChatGPT's search finds and cites your page.

Users on Plus, Pro and Business plans never see ChatGPT ads, so inside ChatGPT the main way to reach them is in the answer itself. An ad is a sensible way to be seen while you work on that.

How do I start claiming my place in ChatGPT's answers?

Start claiming your place in ChatGPT's answers by finding out which questions already name you, and which don't yet.

Which questions can I still claim in ChatGPT's answers?

There are more openings than you might expect:

  • Questions no page answers plainly. When nobody's page answers a question clearly, a business whose page does can give ChatGPT something to read and cite.
  • Your own website. In our tests, businesses' own sites were the largest group ChatGPT cited for "who should I hire" questions: 30 of the 51 sites.
  • Paid-plan users. They see no ads at all, so a citation is your main way in front of them inside ChatGPT.

What are my first steps to claim a place in ChatGPT's answers?

Follow this order:

  1. Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says about your business today and which questions it answers with someone else, then plan with us on a free call.
  2. Claim the gap we find. Put the answer in plain text on your own site, and on the listings ChatGPT cites for your trade.
  3. Decide on ads once you know where you stand. If ChatGPT isn't naming you yet, an ad can keep you visible to Free and Go users while your pages do the slower work.

Claiming the space is what EasyFound, an AI SEO service for Malaysian businesses, does: we check six AI tools in three languages and make the changes that help them name you. Start with the free check below.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ChatGPT ad the same as a recommendation?

No. OpenAI says ads are paid placements and that seeing an ad doesn't mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser. The answer above the ad is generated separately.

How much does it cost to be featured in ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI doesn't sell places in ChatGPT's answers, so the cost of being cited is the work on your own pages and listings. ChatGPT ads are sold separately through OpenAI's Ads Manager and ranked on relevance and advertiser bids.

How can I see if ChatGPT sends visitors to my website?

Check your analytics for visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com or referred from chatgpt.com. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Some visits still arrive untagged, so treat the count as a minimum.

Is it a scam when an agency promises to get me into ChatGPT?

Not necessarily, but a guarantee is a warning sign. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed, so no agency can promise a citation. Honest work, such as making your site readable and your facts plain, raises your chances without a guarantee.
