How can a café or food brand get recommended by ChatGPT in Malaysia?
EasyFound · · 7 min read
Mostly by being written about in the places ChatGPT reads for food. In our Malaysian tests, about one link in twelve went to an eatery's own website when people asked where to eat. The rest went to food guides, listings and tourism pages. In the few order-ahead questions we had, like cakes or catering, the seller's own site led instead. So work on both.
A café or food brand gets recommended by ChatGPT in Malaysia mostly through what others have written about it. In our tests of food and beverage (F&B) questions, ChatGPT took its restaurant, stall and café picks from food guides, ranking lists, listings and tourism guides. In the few order-ahead questions we had, such as cakes or catering, the seller's own website led instead.
Picture a customer typing "Any nice café for breakfast near me this weekend? Somewhere comfortable to sit with my parents." When we asked questions like that, about one link in twelve under ChatGPT's answers went to an eatery's own website.
Where does ChatGPT read about cafés and food brands in Malaysia?
ChatGPT read about Malaysian cafés and food brands on other people's pages far more than it did for service businesses. We went back to six of our saved tests and sorted every link under ChatGPT's answers with one set of rules. The six tests also asked about clinics, tuition centres, aircon firms and other services, so we could compare.
| What the customer asked for | Answers | Links to the business's own website |
|---|---|---|
| A place to eat or drink (nasi lemak, seafood, cafés) | 36 | 12 of 140 |
| Food to order ahead (custom cakes, kuih raya, catering) | 8 | 25 of 36 |
| A service business (dentist, tuition, aircon, salon and others) | 46 | 90 of 174 |
So for service businesses, about half the links were the business's own pages. For places to eat, hardly any were. The middle row is small, only four questions asked twice each, so treat it as a first sign and not a rule.
Which pages does ChatGPT cite when it recommends a café or restaurant?
When ChatGPT recommended a café, restaurant or stall, it mostly cited articles and listings written by someone else. Which kind depended on the city and the dish.
| Kind of page | Links | Where we saw it most |
|---|---|---|
| Food blogs, ranking lists, guides and news | 60 | Nasi lemak in KL, cafés in Bangsar and Johor Bahru |
| Listings, review and map pages | 40 | TripAdvisor for cafés in Miri and Sandakan, place pages for JB cafés |
| State tourism and government pages | 20 | Seafood in Penang |
| The eatery's own website | 12 | Brunch cafés in Bangsar |
| Reddit, forums and Lemon8 | 8 | Spread across tests |
Each test has its own article with the detail:
- KL nasi lemak: blogs and ranking sites led, as our nasi lemak test shows.
- Penang seafood: the state's tourism guides were cited in every answer, in our tourist test.
- Miri and Sandakan cafés: every link was TripAdvisor, in one answer per town, in our Sabah and Sarawak test.
OpenAI's own example of how ChatGPT searches is a food one. Ask for good restaurants nearby and it "may rewrite your prompt into the search query 'top restaurants San Francisco'" (OpenAI). Our reading: a "top restaurants" search brings back lists and guides, not one café's homepage.
When does ChatGPT cite a café or food brand's own website?
In the four order-ahead questions we had, ChatGPT cited the food seller's own website far more than it did for places to eat. That's eight answers, so it's a lead to test, not a rule. For questions like "Can you recommend a home baker in PJ who does custom birthday cakes?", about seven links in ten went to the sellers' own sites. Those pages listed what a food guide can't: cake designs, prices, minimum orders and delivery areas.
Cafés with a real website got cited too. In our two Bangsar brunch answers, four of nine links went to the cafés' own sites. And in our just-opened test, two new cafés with no pages beyond "new openings" round-ups weren't recommended at all.
A smaller café or stall can still get in. In the nasi lemak test, famous names held the plain "best" question, and lesser-known stalls appeared once the customer asked for something specific, like late-night hours.
What can't these tests tell a café or food brand about ChatGPT recommendations?
- How much each page counted. We saw which pages ChatGPT cited, not how it weighed them.
- The ChatGPT app. We used OpenAI's API on two days in October 2026. The app, with maps and your location, can differ.
- Every dish and town. Forty-four food answers is a small set, and one test used a different model.
What should a café or food brand do to get recommended by ChatGPT?
Some of this work is off your own website. For a café or food brand, that's where ChatGPT did most of its reading.
- Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says when customers ask for food like yours, then go through it with us on a free call.
- Read what's written about you first. Search your name on TripAdvisor, place listings and your mall's directory. Fix wrong hours, addresses and closed days, and keep them the same everywhere.
- Get into the guides for your town and dish. That may be a food blog, a "best of" list or your state tourism body's food guide. Invite writers for the one thing you do best.
- Keep a simple page of your own. State your area, hours, signature dishes and what makes you different, in plain text. Here's how to write a page ChatGPT will quote.
- If you take orders, publish the order details. Products, prices, minimum order, lead time and delivery area belong on your own site as text.
- Don't rely on Instagram alone. None of the food links in these tests was an Instagram or TikTok page. Our Instagram and TikTok check explains why.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI visibility service for F&B brands in Malaysia?
There isn't one agreed answer, and EasyFound sells this kind of service, so we're one of the options. When we put this exact question to ChatGPT twice through OpenAI's API on 11 October 2026, one answer listed agencies and the other listed software tools, with no provider in both, and neither named us. For a food and beverage brand, pick a service that shows you the real questions, the answers, and which third-party pages ChatGPT cited, because in our tests that's where most food answers came from.
Does my café need a website for ChatGPT to recommend it?
Not always, in EasyFound's Malaysian tests. Stalls and seafood restaurants were named with no website of their own cited, because food guides, listings and tourism guides described them. But where a café had its own site, ChatGPT did cite it. In the four order-ahead questions we had, such as custom cakes or catering, the seller's own site was the main source. That's a small sample, so treat it as a first sign. A simple page of your own is still worth having.
Does ChatGPT use TripAdvisor or Google Maps for restaurants and cafés in Malaysia?
TripAdvisor yes, in some places. In EasyFound's tests, ChatGPT cited TripAdvisor for breakfast cafés in Kota Kinabalu, Miri and Sandakan, and it was the only site cited in the Miri answer and the Sandakan answer. None of the 176 links in our food answers was a Google Maps page, though a few were Waze or Apple Maps place pages. We tested through OpenAI's API, and the ChatGPT app may show maps differently.
Will posting on Instagram or TikTok get my café into ChatGPT's answers?
Not directly, as far as EasyFound's Malaysian tests can show. None of the links in our 44 food answers went to an Instagram, TikTok or Facebook page. ChatGPT named food sellers it could read about on a website, a guide or a listing. Keep posting for your customers, and put the same facts on a page ChatGPT can open.
Does being on GrabFood or foodpanda help ChatGPT recommend my restaurant?
We can't show that it does. In EasyFound's Malaysian tests, one link out of 176 in ChatGPT's food answers went to a delivery app page, a foodpanda listing for a bakery, and none went to GrabFood. One more went to a cake-delivery marketplace. That doesn't prove delivery listings are ignored, only that ChatGPT rarely cited them in these answers.

Our data: EasyFound, Pages ChatGPT cited for food questions and service questions in Malaysia, October 2026. We made no new AI calls for these counts. Every count comes from 90 saved answers in six earlier tests, all through OpenAI's Responses API with web search required, not the ChatGPT app: nasi lemak in KL (16 answers), visitors' questions about Penang seafood and KL spas (14), everyday questions in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Miri and Sandakan (20), Instagram-heavy trades (12 of its answers: café, home baker, kuih raya, home caterer, lash and nail salon, bridal makeup), ChatGPT against Google's places list (16) and just-opened businesses (12 recommendation answers). All ran on 8 October 2026 with the chat-latest model, except the Sabah and Sarawak test, which ran on 9 October with gpt-5.4-mini. Retail questions in those tests are left out. A "link" is a distinct web address cited in one answer. We labelled every link by hand with one set of rules, so a few type counts differ from the tables in each test's own article; the totals and own-website counts for the nasi lemak and Sabah and Sarawak tests match those articles. The tourist test's own article counts each site once per answer, so it counts fewer links than we do here. "Own website" includes a business's own ordering store or free page. A cake-delivery marketplace that sells for many bakers is counted as a listing, not an own site. Nine service links where we couldn't tell an own site from a lead-generation site are counted as not own. "Order-ahead food" is four questions asked twice each. The quoted café question comes from the Sabah and Sarawak test. For the first FAQ we asked ChatGPT "best AI visibility service for F&B brands in Malaysia" twice on 11 October 2026 through OpenAI's API (gpt-5.4-mini, web search, location Malaysia). Download the labelled links (CSV). In the CSV, each business's own site is a numbered label, and smaller blogs, ranking sites and directories are shown by type. We don't name the businesses, because a few test runs aren't a ranking.
