Does posting on Instagram or TikTok help ChatGPT recommend my business?

EasyFound · · 8 min read

TL;DR

Not directly, in our Malaysian tests. We asked ChatGPT for the kinds of business that live on Instagram and TikTok, like home bakers, florists, makeup artists and modest-fashion sellers. It cited no Instagram post. It named businesses it could read about on a website, many of them active on Instagram too. Keep posting for customers, and put the same facts on a page ChatGPT can open.

Not directly, as far as our Malaysian tests can show. ChatGPT cited no Instagram post, whether customers asked about service businesses or about sellers who live on Instagram, like home bakers, florists and makeup artists. It named businesses it could read about on a website, and many of those post on Instagram too.

If your cake orders or bridal bookings come in through DMs, your posts are doing real work. They just aren't what ChatGPT reads when a customer asks for someone like you.

Does it depend on the industry whether Instagram or TikTok helps ChatGPT recommend you?

The industry changed which sites ChatGPT used, but not the Instagram result. Our first look used 1,292 saved ChatGPT answers to Malaysian questions, mostly about service businesses. Instagram matters more for shops, beauty and food, so we then asked ChatGPT ten questions about those sellers, twice each.

ChatGPT answers citing Instagram or TikTok, by type of question (EasyFound, Malaysia, Sep–Oct 2026; CSV)
Questions about Cited Instagram Cited a business's TikTok
Mostly service businesses (1,292 saved answers) 0 0
Instagram-heavy retail, beauty and food (20 new answers) 0 0

In the new test, 18 of the 20 answers cited at least one business's own website. What changed by business type was which other sites ChatGPT leaned on.

What ChatGPT cited for each Instagram-heavy business type (new test, 2 answers each, 8 Oct 2026; CSV)
Customer asked for What ChatGPT cited
Custom birthday cake from a home baker, PJ Bakers' own websites, a directory, a blog listing
Korean-style bouquet from a florist, JB Florists' own websites only
Bridal makeup artist, KL Artists' own websites, a directory
Small modest-fashion brand Brands' own websites, Shopee shop pages, a link-in-bio page, a media site
Homemade kuih raya, Klang Valley Sellers' own websites, a food site
Home-based kenduri caterer, Shah Alam Caterers' own websites, a free blog, directories
Brunch café, Bangsar Cafés' own websites, blogs, booking sites
Thrift or vintage shop, KL Shops' own websites, media and listicles
Local skincare sold on TikTok Shop Brands' own websites, a retailer, Reddit, a TikTok advertiser page, a dermatology site, a university paper
Lashes and nails, Cheras Directories and booking sites only

For lashes and nails, beauty directories and booking platforms did the job no salon website did.

Does ChatGPT search Instagram or TikTok when customers ask for a home baker or florist?

ChatGPT often tries Instagram for these businesses, and comes back empty. In 8 of the 20 new answers, its search ran a query aimed at Instagram: for the home baker, florist, makeup artist and modest-fashion questions. None of those searches returned an Instagram page, so it answered from websites it could reach.

TikTok got further, but not into the answer. For the TikTok Shop skincare question, ChatGPT searched TikTok Shop directly and got product pages back. It cited none of them, and told the shopper it "couldn't independently confirm every brand's current TikTok Shop listings". The one TikTok page it cited was TikTok's own advertiser case study about a brand.

Our saved answers looked the same: ChatGPT searched Instagram in 6 of the 1,292 and got no Instagram page back.

Did the businesses ChatGPT recommended post on Instagram and TikTok?

About half of the businesses we checked are on Instagram, and ChatGPT still cited their websites instead. We checked 17 businesses it recommended through their own sites in the new test.

At least 9 have a real Instagram account that we could find. At least 3 have a TikTok account, and the biggest has over 100,000 followers. ChatGPT cited none of those accounts.

So in this small test, an active feed didn't line up with who got named. Busy accounts, quiet ones and businesses with no account we could find all got in the same way, through a website:

  • A kuih raya seller with tens of thousands of followers on both Instagram and TikTok was cited through its website.
  • A home baker that "primarily takes enquiries through Instagram and Facebook", in ChatGPT's words, was cited through the About page on its own website.
  • Two florists and a caterer whose sites don't link to Instagram or TikTok, and whose accounts we couldn't find, were recommended the same way.

The common thread was a page ChatGPT could open, not a feed. With 17 businesses, that's a pattern, not proof that posting never helps.

Why can't ChatGPT read my Instagram or TikTok posts?

Instagram and TikTok both keep out the crawler ChatGPT's search depends on. When we fetched TikTok's robots.txt on 7 October 2026, it named OpenAI's three bots and blocked each from the whole site. Instagram's robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot through its catch-all rule, as our Facebook article found for Meta's sites.

OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links"1. Google gets a different deal: Instagram lets search engines index public reels and posts from public professional accounts2.

Lemon8 is the open exception: its robots.txt lets OpenAI's crawlers in. Lemon8 posts came up in ChatGPT's search in 6 of the 20 new answers, but none was cited.

What can't our tests tell me about Instagram, TikTok and ChatGPT?

  • The ChatGPT app. We used OpenAI's API. If a customer pastes your Instagram link into the app, OpenAI says robots.txt rules "may not apply" to that visit. We didn't test it.
  • A small new sample. Ten English questions, asked twice on one day. It shows a pattern across business types, not a rule for every seller.
  • Google's AI answers. Instagram posts can reach Google search. We didn't test Google's AI answers here.

How do I get my Instagram and TikTok facts in front of ChatGPT?

Move the facts, not the posts: put on a readable page what your feed already shows.

  1. Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT answers when someone asks, for example, "Need a florist in JB for my girlfriend's birthday, someone who does pretty Korean-style bouquets and can deliver. Any recommendations?" Then go through it with us on a free call.
  2. Put the facts from your posts on a public page: what you make, your area, how to order, delivery. A free page counts if ChatGPT can reach it, and your Google Business Profile should say the same.
  3. Link the accounts both ways. Link your Instagram and TikTok from that page, and the page from your bios, so ChatGPT can match the accounts to your business.
  4. Run a salon? Complete your directory and booking listings. For lashes and nails, those were the only sites ChatGPT cited.
  5. Keep posting for your customers. Leave on the Instagram setting that lets public posts appear in search engines, so Google can show them.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT see my Instagram or TikTok posts?

Mostly not through its search. TikTok's robots.txt (checked 7 October 2026) names OAI-SearchBot, the crawler OpenAI uses for ChatGPT search, and blocks it from the whole site. Instagram's blocks it through a catch-all rule. In EasyFound's test of 20 ChatGPT answers about Instagram-heavy Malaysian businesses (8 October 2026), its search aimed at Instagram in 8 answers and got back no Instagram page.

I'm a home baker who mostly sells on Instagram. Will ChatGPT ever recommend me?

It can, if a page it can read describes you. Asked twice for a custom birthday cake baker in PJ (8 October 2026), ChatGPT searched Instagram both times and found nothing there. It recommended one home baker that 'primarily takes enquiries through Instagram and Facebook', citing the About page on that baker's own website. Its other picks came through bakers' own websites, a directory and a blog listing.

Does ChatGPT recommend TikTok Shop sellers?

It named Malaysian skincare brands sold on TikTok Shop in EasyFound's test, but cited their websites and a retailer, not TikTok Shop. TikTok Shop product pages came back in its search, yet it cited none and said it couldn't confirm every brand's current TikTok Shop listings. The one TikTok page it cited was TikTok's own advertiser case study about a brand.

Why does ChatGPT tell me to be active on Instagram and TikTok to get recommended?

Its advice and its sources don't match. Asked how a small Malaysian business gets recommended by ChatGPT, it told owners to be on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok in 2 of EasyFound's saved answers (September 2026). Yet it cited no Instagram page in 1,292 saved Malaysian answers. It cited none in a new test on Instagram-heavy businesses either.

Should I put my Instagram handle on my website?

Yes. Link your Instagram and TikTok accounts from your website, and your website from your bio, so customers and search tools can tell the accounts belong to you. In EasyFound's test, ChatGPT gave a shopper a home baker's Instagram handle that it had read on a blog listing, not on Instagram itself.

Our data: EasyFound, Instagram and TikTok in ChatGPT and Gemini answers to Malaysian questions, October 2026. Download the counts (CSV). Businesses, posts and accounts stay unnamed.

  • New test, 8 October 2026: 10 questions about Instagram- and TikTok-heavy Malaysian businesses, each asked twice (20 answers), through OpenAI's Responses API with model chat-latest, web search required, user location Malaysia and no system prompt. This is not the ChatGPT app. We counted cited pages, pages in ChatGPT's search results and its search queries, and labelled each cited site as a business's own site (free blog and link-in-bio pages included) or a third party. We then checked by hand whether 17 of the businesses cited through their own websites had public Instagram or TikTok accounts (8 October 2026). "Couldn't find" means no link on the site and no matching account in a quick search, not proof that none exists.
  • Saved answers: 1,292 ChatGPT answers with location set to Malaysia from 7 September to 6 October 2026, from many earlier tests, mostly gpt-5.4-mini. This is the same answer set definition as our Facebook article, which used the 30 days to 2 October. The one TikTok page cited in that set was TikTok's own seller help page, for a TikTok Shop question. 157 Gemini answers from 1 to 6 October 2026 cited Instagram and TikTok zero times.
  • Robots.txt files for Instagram, TikTok and Lemon8 were fetched on 7 October 2026; TikTok's and Instagram's were re-fetched with OAI-SearchBot's user agent and came back the same.
