Do SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE listings help ChatGPT trust my business?
EasyFound · · 8 min read
Being registered isn't what ChatGPT reads. A public list it can open is. In our Malaysian tests, ChatGPT cited SSM for company secretaries, MATRADE's directory for exporters and SME Corp for grants, and none of them when shoppers asked where to buy local products online. Write your registration on your own website, and get onto any public list your trade has.
Only when the listing is a public web page ChatGPT can read, and mostly in trades where customers expect a licence. In our Malaysian tests, ChatGPT cited SSM for company secretary and accounting questions, MATRADE's exporter directory when overseas buyers asked for suppliers, and SME Corp mainly for grants. When shoppers asked where to buy local products online, none of the three came up.
If you're moving from Shopee or TikTok Shop to your own store, your SSM certificate is probably filed away, and maybe an SME Corp status certificate too. They matter when you apply for a grant or a business account. ChatGPT mostly doesn't see them, because it can only use what it can open.
How often does ChatGPT cite SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE when it recommends a business?
ChatGPT rarely cited SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE when recommending a Malaysian business in our tests: in about one answer in eleven. We counted every citation of the three in 1,420 saved ChatGPT answers.
| What the person asked | Answers citing SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE |
|---|---|
| Recommend a business | 71 of 785 |
| About one named business | 4 of 130 |
| Rules, how-to or advice | 11 of 505 |
Almost all of the 71 came from two kinds of question:
- SSM: all 53 were company secretary, accounting or company-registration questions.
- MATRADE: cited in 14 of 17 answers to overseas buyers looking for suppliers.
- SME Corp: 8 answers in the whole tally, mostly about grants and programmes.
ChatGPT's searches tell the same story. It searched for SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE by name in 40 of the 614 recommendation answers whose searches we could see.
Which official lists does ChatGPT cite when it recommends a business?
ChatGPT cited public lists of licensed providers: open pages naming the firms in one trade. It did so in about one recommendation answer in five, mostly in trades where a careful customer checks a licence first.
| Trade | Answers citing a public list | The list it cited most |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics and health care | 83 of 194 | MOH's national registry of doctors in aesthetic practice |
| Company secretaries and accounting | 28 of 115 | SSM's list of registered company secretaries |
| Solar and energy | 21 of 64 | SEDA's directory of registered solar service providers |
| Exporters, asked by overseas buyers | 12 of 17 | MATRADE's exporter directory |
| Home, car and repair services | 4 of 136 | CIDB's contractor search |
| Hotels and travel | 1 of 63 | A MOTAC licence list |
| Online shopping for local products | 0 of 16 | None |
SSM's list covers company secretaries, a profession SSM licenses, not every firm on its company register. Our reading: a register gets cited when it is the trade's licence list and sits on an open page.
Can ChatGPT read my SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE record?
ChatGPT can't easily check whether your business is registered with SSM or SME Corp. Of the three, only MATRADE's directory gave ChatGPT business entries to cite in our tests. Your SSM profile is behind a sign-in, and SME Corp's MSME status is a certificate, not a public list we could find. ChatGPT's own answer is more hopeful. We asked it our exact title question twice (gpt-5.4-mini through the API). It didn't search either time, and one answer said these listings "can help ChatGPT find and verify your business more easily".
| Listing | What it is | Can ChatGPT read your entry? |
|---|---|---|
| SSM company profile | Sold through portals such as SSM e-Info1, which says "Please sign in to see full results"2 | Unlikely. Never cited in our 1,420 answers |
| SME Corp MSME status | "A registration system to validate MSME status", used to qualify for government help aimed at MSMEs3 | No public list found. SME Corp pages were cited only for grants, programmes and guides |
| MATRADE directories | A "Products Directory of Malaysian exporters registered with MATRADE"4 | Yes. Its e-book directory pages are plain web pages, and ChatGPT cited them |
The robots.txt files of ssm.com.my, SSM e-Info and matrade.gov.my don't block OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT's search crawler. OpenAI says sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers"5. Our reading: for SSM, the barrier is the sign-in.
What does ChatGPT say about SSM when it recommends a contractor?
When recommending contractors in our tests, ChatGPT told customers to check SSM, and repeated what a business said about itself. SSM came up in 15 answers about renovation and aircon firms, and some did both:
- In 14, it told the customer to check or look for a firm's SSM or CIDB registration before hiring.
- In 4, it credited a named firm with registration, citing the firm's own website or a classified ad: "says it is SSM-registered and CIDB-certified".
So whenever a named firm was credited with SSM registration, the line came from what the business wrote about itself. Asked whether a firm is legit, ChatGPT looks for the same proof, as our ad-click test found. If your SSM name differs from your trading name, show both together.
What can't this tally tell me about SSM, SME Corp, MATRADE and ChatGPT?
- Whether registering changes who gets named. We counted what ChatGPT cited, not businesses before and after registering.
- The ChatGPT app, or a typical customer. Every answer came through OpenAI's API, and the questions came from separate tests, not a sample of what Malaysians ask.
- Other AI tools. Google's AI and others may read these registers differently.
How do I make my SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE registration count with ChatGPT?
Put the proof where ChatGPT can read it: on your own pages, and on the public list your trade has.
- Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says when customers ask for a business like yours, such as "Can you recommend a renovation contractor in Shah Alam? I want one that's properly registered with SSM.", then go through it with us on a free call.
- Write your registration on your website as plain text: your SSM name and number next to your trading name in the footer, plus licences customers look for, such as CIDB grade or halal certification.
- Get onto your trade's public list, under the same name, if your trade has one: CIDB for contractors, SEDA for solar, JAKIM's halal directory for food makers, MOH's register for aesthetic clinics.
- If you export, register with MATRADE and give each market its own page. In our overseas-buyer questions, few smaller exporters were cited from their own websites, and the clearest case was a page aimed at buyers in one export market.

Frequently asked questions
Does registering my business with SSM help it show up in ChatGPT?
We saw no sign that registering alone does it. EasyFound tallied 1,420 saved ChatGPT answers to Malaysian questions (OpenAI's API with web search, location Malaysia, late September to early October 2026). ChatGPT cited SSM's website in 61 of them, mostly for company secretary, accounting and company-registration questions, and never a business's own SSM record. SSM's company profiles sit on a portal that asks you to sign in. What reached ChatGPT's answers was the registration a business wrote about itself, on its own website or a classified ad.
Can ChatGPT check if my business is registered with SSM?
Not easily. SSM sells company and business profiles through portals such as SSM e-Info, which says 'Please sign in to see full results'. In EasyFound's tally of saved ChatGPT answers to Malaysian questions, ChatGPT never cited a business's SSM profile. It did cite SSM's public list of registered company secretaries, and in 14 renovation and aircon answers it told customers to check a contractor's SSM or CIDB registration themselves.
Does an SME Corp MSME status certificate help my business get recommended by ChatGPT?
We found no sign of it. SME Corp describes MSME status as 'a registration system to validate MSME status', which businesses use to qualify for government help aimed at MSMEs, and we found no public list of certified firms. In EasyFound's tally of saved ChatGPT answers, SME Corp's websites were cited 8 times, for grants, programmes, courses and guides, never as a list of businesses.
Should I list my export business in the MATRADE directory so ChatGPT can find it?
If overseas buyers are your customers, it's likely worth it. EasyFound asked ChatGPT for Malaysian suppliers on behalf of overseas buyers 17 times, in English, Chinese, Indonesian and Arabic. It cited MATRADE in 14 of those answers, mostly its directory pages, which are plain web pages. Some entries it quoted named certificate standards that have since been replaced, a sign of old directory editions, so also keep your own website current, with a page for each export market.
Does ChatGPT check SSM when shoppers ask where to buy a local product online?
Not in EasyFound's Malaysian test. In 16 ChatGPT answers to questions such as where to buy local skincare, kuih or coffee online, it cited no SSM, SME Corp, MATRADE or other government page, and its searches never asked for registered or licensed sellers. It pointed shoppers to shops and listings instead.

Our data: EasyFound, When ChatGPT cited SSM, SME Corp, MATRADE and other official registers, October 2026. We made no new AI calls for the tally. It covers all 1,420 ChatGPT answers we had saved from 24 September to 4 October 2026 (answers older than 30 days excluded): earlier EasyFound tests on Malaysian buying questions, plus three question sets run on 30 September and 1 October for SME owners and their customers, overseas buyers, and online shoppers and sellers. All went through OpenAI's Responses API with web search and location set to Malaysia, not the ChatGPT app: gpt-5.4-mini for most, chat-latest for an industry question set and for 173 clinic answers where web search was required and searches weren't recorded. Questions mixed short keyword phrases and chatty sentences in English, Malay, Chinese, Indonesian and Arabic. We classed each question by type and trade from its wording, with a keyword script and hand corrections. A "recommend a business" question asks ChatGPT to name or suggest a business, brand or provider, such as "best accounting firm for small business in Kuala Lumpur"; questions about AI, marketing, rules or how-to count as advice. We matched search queries, cited links and answer text against official domains and register pages, and read the SSM lines in the home-services answers by hand. In 143 older answers from late August 2026, none cited SSM, SME Corp or MATRADE. The two title-question runs on 5 October used gpt-5.4-mini. Download the tally (CSV). Questions about named businesses are anonymised, and we don't name businesses, because one test isn't a ranking.

robots.txt files for ssm.com.my, ssm-einfo.my and matrade.gov.my were read on 5 October 2026. smecorp.gov.my and moh.gov.my returned a bot check to our requests, so we couldn't read theirs; ChatGPT cited pages on both.
