How do I fix wrong information ChatGPT says about my business?

EasyFound · · 6 min read

TL;DR

You fix wrong information in ChatGPT by fixing the pages it reads. Ask the question your customers ask, open the sources to see where the error came from, then correct your website, your Google Business Profile and the page ChatGPT quoted. OpenAI has no form for correcting business details, as far as we could find.

To fix wrong information ChatGPT says about your business, correct the page it took that information from. For questions about a named business, ChatGPT usually searches the web and repeats what it finds. So the fix is to find its source, then correct your own website first, your Google Business Profile next, and the directory or blog it quoted after that.

In our same-name test, one Ipoh coffee shop with no working website we could find got six different sets of opening hours across five answers.

Where does ChatGPT get the wrong information about my business?

ChatGPT gets wrong business details from the pages it searches, and in our test they came from other people's pages: directories, blogs, travel sites, or another business's page. Answers quoting a business's own website matched it in 5 of 6; the two that didn't quote it were wrong both times (full breakdown).

How do I fix wrong information ChatGPT says about my business, step by step?

Fix wrong information in ChatGPT in this order: record it, trace it, correct the source, check again.

  1. Ask the question your customers ask. Log out, then type it the way they would: "Is [your shop] in Ipoh open on Sunday morning?" Ask in Malay or Chinese too if customers do. Screenshot it.
  2. Open the Sources. OpenAI says you can "Select Sources, when available, to view cited sources and other relevant links"1. Note which page carries the wrong detail. If none show, it may have answered from training; carry on anyway.
  3. Fix your own website. Put your name, address, phone and hours on one page as plain text, not only in an image.
  4. Fix your Google Business Profile. Match the hours and phone to your website (what to fix there).
  5. Fix the page ChatGPT quoted. Claim or edit the directory listing, or email the blogger the correct detail.
  6. Make sure ChatGPT can read your site. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says "make sure you aren't blocking OAI-SearchBot"2. Which AI bots to allow explains how.
  7. Ask again on a set date. Use the same question and compare with your screenshot. There is no fixed timetable.

Which pages should I fix first when ChatGPT gets my business wrong?

Fix your own website first, because that's the page whose details matched in our test, then the page ChatGPT actually cited.

Where a wrong ChatGPT answer came from, and what to fix first
Where the wrong detail came from What to fix first
Your own website, out of date Update it, including old promotion pages
A directory, review or travel site Claim or edit the listing, and put the right detail on your own site
A food blog or news article Ask the writer to update it, and link them to your own page
A same-named business's page Spell out your town and address on your site, and say "we have no other outlets" if that's true
No source shown Fix your website and listings, then re-check later

Can I report wrong business information to OpenAI directly?

Not as a correction request, as far as we could find. OpenAI's help centre and forms have no route we could find for fixing a business's hours, phone number or address. What exists instead:

  • Thumbs down. OpenAI says: "Click the thumbs down icon below any response to provide feedback"3. It's feedback, and "the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to train our models"4.
  • Content reports. The report form's reasons include spam, fraud, privacy and intellectual property, but not wrong business details5. OpenAI says "Reported domains and other content may be reviewed by OpenAI's Model Quality team"6. Our reading is that this suits a fake or scam page, not a stale directory listing.
  • Privacy correction. OpenAI's privacy policy offers a correction request when output "contains factually inaccurate information about you"7. It sits under personal data, so our reading is that it's meant for people named in an answer, not a company's hours.

Correcting ChatGPT inside your own chat changes your Memory; OpenAI doesn't say it changes your customers' answers. OpenAI says "You can tell ChatGPT that remembered information is incorrect or outdated"8, and Memory personalises responses for you.

How do I fix festive hours, Malay or Chinese names and my SSM name in ChatGPT?

Write festive hours, other-language names and your SSM name on your own pages before customers ask.

  • Festive hours. Before Hari Raya or Chinese New Year, add a dated notice to your website, such as "Closed for Chinese New Year from [date], open again on [date]." On Google, special hours cover closures of "up to 6 days in a row"; for 7 or more, Google says to mark the business temporarily closed9. Remove the notice afterwards, or it becomes the next wrong answer.
  • Malay or Chinese names. If customers know you by a Malay or Chinese name, ask ChatGPT using it. If it picks a different business, add that name to your About page next to your address.
  • SSM name vs trading name. If ChatGPT shows your Sdn Bhd name with someone else's address, put both names together in your website footer. The identity checklist covers name, address and phone in full.

What can't these steps promise about fixing ChatGPT?

  • A date. We found no OpenAI timetable for when a corrected page shows up in answers.
  • The app. Our test used OpenAI's API, which can answer differently from the ChatGPT app.
  • Proof. We didn't correct listings and re-test, so our figures show where good answers came from, not a before-and-after.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask OpenAI to correct my business hours in ChatGPT?

We couldn't find a way. When we checked OpenAI's help centre and forms in October 2026, there was no form for correcting a business's hours, phone number or address. OpenAI's content report form covers issues such as spam, fraud, privacy and intellectual property, and its privacy correction route is for inaccurate personal information about you. For business details, correct the pages ChatGPT reads instead.

Does pressing thumbs down on a wrong ChatGPT answer fix it?

Not directly. OpenAI describes the thumbs-down icon as a way to 'provide feedback' on a response. It doesn't promise to correct the answer, and it says the whole conversation may be used to improve its models. Press it if you like, but fix your website and listings too.

If I tell ChatGPT my correct opening hours in a chat, will it tell my customers?

Not as far as OpenAI documents. Telling ChatGPT something in your own chat can update your own Memory, which OpenAI describes as personalising responses for you. It doesn't say this changes answers for other people. Customers' answers come from what ChatGPT searches and what it learned in training.

ChatGPT says my shop is closed on Sunday but we're open, what should I do?

Ask ChatGPT the same question, open its Sources, and find the page that says you close on Sunday. Fix that page if it's yours, or ask the directory or blog to update it. Then make sure your own website shows your Sunday hours as plain text, and your Google Business Profile matches.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to show my corrected information?

We found no published timetable from OpenAI. When ChatGPT searches, it repeats what its search finds, so a corrected page can show up once search picks it up again. What it learned in training changes only when the model is updated. Re-check on a set date and keep the old answer to compare.
