Do overseas buyers find Malaysian electronics manufacturers through ChatGPT?
EasyFound · · 7 min read
Yes, they can. When overseas buyers asked ChatGPT for an assembly, machining or moulding partner in Malaysia in our test, every answer shortlisted factories there. When a buyer named a standard, ChatGPT looked for each firm's certificate and flagged the ones it couldn't confirm. Beyond factories' own sites, it leaned on InvestPenang and MIDA, not MATRADE. List your certificates, town and industries plainly on your own site.
Yes, overseas buyers can find Malaysian electronics manufacturers through ChatGPT. In our test, buyers in Germany, the US, Japan and Singapore asked it for an assembly, machining or moulding partner in Malaysia, and every answer shortlisted factories in Malaysia. When a buyer named a standard such as ISO 13485, ChatGPT looked for each firm's certificate and flagged the ones it couldn't confirm. Beyond the factories' own sites, it leaned on InvestPenang and MIDA, and cited MATRADE only once.
If you run a PCBA line in Bayan Lepas or a machine shop in Kulim, a buyer in Stuttgart or Osaka may meet you first in a ChatGPT shortlist. Penang alone has "over 6,500 well-diversified and competent local suppliers", says InvestPenang1. Each answer in our test shortlisted only five to eight.
Which Malaysian manufacturers does ChatGPT name for overseas buyers?
ChatGPT named a mix of factories in Malaysia: global contract manufacturers' Penang and Johor plants alongside small local firms. We asked nine sourcing questions twice each, from the buyer's country, and got 116 shortlist entries. ChatGPT searched before every answer.
ChatGPT matched firms to each buyer and said which ones to send a request for quotation (RFQ) first. For a startup, it warned that a big contract manufacturer may not give a small programme enough attention. For tiny batches, it named a small Penang firm that "advertises no MOQ and support down to a single assembled board".
| What ChatGPT linked next to the name | Shortlist entries |
|---|---|
| The manufacturer's own website | 85 of 116 |
| An InvestPenang page only, usually a company profile | 19 |
| A MIDA page only | 9 |
| A stock exchange filing or distributor page | 3 |
Factories' own sites coming first is the pattern we also saw for IT support companies. What's different for exporters is the agency pages.
Does ChatGPT use MATRADE, InvestPenang or MIDA to find Malaysian manufacturers?
To find Malaysian manufacturers, ChatGPT leaned on two investment agencies, InvestPenang and MIDA, more than on MATRADE or trade directories. It cited InvestPenang in half of the answers, often a company profile from its LLC/SMEs Directory. It cited MIDA's EE Discovery directory in three answers. In three answers it searched InvestPenang's site directly.
- MATRADE was cited once. That's unlike food and furniture exporters, where our registry tally found it cited far more often.
- Kompass, Thomasnet, Made-in-Asia and Alibaba didn't appear in ChatGPT's search results or citations in our test.
- One answer told a US buyer to skip "Alibaba-style directories" and start from MIDA, MATRADE and InvestPenang.
InvestPenang's directory exists for exactly this. It says buyers "may access company profiles, contact details and website links to ease your sourcing needs"2. That directory covers Penang only. In our answers, no Johor or Kedah state agency page was cited, so firms there relied on their own sites or MIDA.
What does ChatGPT tell overseas buyers about a Malaysian factory?
ChatGPT repeated plain facts from each factory's pages. Across the 116 entries, it most often gave:
- where it is, in 93, often down to the town or industrial area, such as Bayan Lepas or Tebrau;
- the industries it serves or suits, such as medical or automotive, in 55;
- a certificate, such as ISO 9001 or IATF 16949, in 36;
- volume fit, such as high-mix, low-volume work or prototypes, in 25.
Nearly half of the factory pages ChatGPT cited were homepages, so your homepage has to carry these facts.
Does ChatGPT check a manufacturer's certificates?
ChatGPT looked for certificate evidence whenever the buyer named a standard. In our answers to an ISO 13485 and an IATF 16949 question, every shortlist entry mentioned a certificate, or said it couldn't confirm one. Elsewhere, about one in seven did.
When proof was missing, ChatGPT said so. Of one machine shop, it wrote: "I did not find equally clear current ISO 13485 evidence in the material I reviewed, so I'd treat it as a secondary candidate".
Another firm landed in what ChatGPT called its "non-13485/verification bucket", because the InvestPenang profile it found describes the firm as "pursuing ISO13485 certification". We don't know that firm's current status, and nor did ChatGPT: it told the buyer to ask for a valid certificate, because it can only repeat what the page says.
Does ChatGPT look for the buyer's own country?
ChatGPT checked for proof of the buyer's market when the question asked for it. When an Osaka buyer wanted firms used to Japanese customers, a small local Penang firm made its first three calls because the firm's site says its overseas markets include Japan. For four other firms in the same answer, it said their public pages didn't show it. It's the same habit our cross-border test found with shipping lines: ChatGPT repeats the line on your page.
How far should a factory owner read into this test?
- How many buyers source this way. We tested what ChatGPT answers, not how often buyers ask it.
- Who was left out. We saw who got named, not the factories that never appeared, and every question already asked for Malaysia.
- The ChatGPT app, or other dates. These are 18 answers from OpenAI's API on one day, in English. The app uses chat history and may differ.
How do I get my Malaysian factory onto ChatGPT's shortlist for overseas buyers?
Write down the facts buyers screen on, where ChatGPT can read them.
- Hear what ChatGPT tells your buyers first. EasyFound's free check asks the kind of question a buyer abroad would type, such as "We're a German company looking for a low-volume, high-mix PCBA assembly partner in Malaysia. Who should we contact?", and we go through what it says about your factory on a free call.
- Put your town, industries and volume fit on your homepage in plain words, such as "SMT and box build in Bayan Lepas, prototypes to 10,000 units, medical and industrial".
- List each certificate with its standard, version and site. Write "ISO 13485:2016, certified for CNC machining at our Perai plant", and update it the week a new one arrives.
- Keep your agency profile current. InvestPenang invites Penang firms to "Be part of our LLC/SMEs list"2, and MIDA's EE Discovery lists electronics firms across Malaysia3.
- Say which markets you already ship to, such as Germany or Japan, without naming customers under NDA.

Frequently asked questions
Can overseas buyers find my Malaysian factory on ChatGPT?
They can, if ChatGPT finds a page that matches what the buyer asked. In EasyFound's October 2026 test, buyers in Germany, the US, Japan and Singapore asked ChatGPT for electronics assembly, CNC machining and plastic moulding partners in Malaysia. All 18 answers shortlisted factories in Malaysia, with five to eight on each list. Most names were linked to the factory's own website; the rest leaned on InvestPenang or MIDA directory profiles.
Does ChatGPT use the MATRADE directory to find Malaysian electronics manufacturers?
Rarely, in EasyFound's test. ChatGPT cited MATRADE in 1 of 18 answers to overseas buyers looking for electronics, machining or moulding suppliers. It cited InvestPenang in 9 and MIDA's EE Discovery directory in 3. It cited no Kompass, Thomasnet, Made-in-Asia or Alibaba page, and none appeared in its search results. For exporters of food, furniture and gloves, an earlier EasyFound tally found MATRADE cited far more often.
Does an InvestPenang company profile help ChatGPT recommend my factory?
It helped Penang firms in EasyFound's test. Of 116 shortlist entries ChatGPT gave overseas buyers, 19 were backed only by an InvestPenang page, with no link to the firm's own site. Most of those were company profiles. ChatGPT repeated details from those profiles, such as headcount, floor space and certificates. Where one profile says a firm is pursuing ISO 13485, ChatGPT put that firm in a verify-first group, so whatever your profile says is what buyers hear.
Does ChatGPT check ISO 13485 or IATF 16949 certificates when it recommends a manufacturer?
It looks for them on public pages when the buyer asks. In EasyFound's test, every shortlist entry in the answers to an ISO 13485 or an IATF 16949 question mentioned a certificate, or said that one couldn't be confirmed. Where it couldn't find clear evidence, it ranked the firm lower or told the buyer to verify. It cannot see an audit report, and some answers told buyers to check which site a certificate covers.
Does ChatGPT recommend big multinationals or smaller Malaysian factories to overseas buyers?
Both, in EasyFound's test, and it matched them to the buyer's size. For a startup or a low-volume buyer it named smaller local firms alongside the big names, and warned that a large contract manufacturer might not give a small programme enough attention. Small firms whose own pages stated their volume fit, such as no minimum order or high-mix, low-volume work, were named for those buyers.

Our data: EasyFound, What ChatGPT tells overseas buyers looking for Malaysian electronics, machining and moulding suppliers, 6 October 2026. Through OpenAI's Responses API (chat-latest) with web search required and approximate user location set to the buyer's country, not the ChatGPT app. Nine English sourcing questions, written the way buyers type, each asked twice: four about EMS or PCBA assembly (Germany, the US, Japan twice), one about Johor box build (Singapore), two about CNC precision machining (Germany, Singapore), one about plastic injection moulding (the US) and one general sourcing question (the US). A shortlist entry is one bulleted business in an answer; ChatGPT also named some firms in passing, which we didn't count. We coded what each entry said by keyword match and checked the matches by hand. "Own website" means a page on the firm's own domain, including global groups' Malaysian plant pages. Download the coding (CSV). Manufacturers stay unnamed: 18 answers on one day aren't a ranking.
