How does AI choose which IT support company to recommend in Malaysia?

EasyFound · · 7 min read

TL;DR

AI mostly chooses an IT support company from what that company's own website says. In our Malaysian ChatGPT test, every answer to an office owner's question linked a provider's own site. It repeated where the company is based, the areas it covers, what the monthly plan includes and how fast it responds. Reviews and star ratings never came up. Put those facts on your site, one page per area.

In our Malaysian ChatGPT test, every answer to an SME owner's question linked at least one provider's own site. The facts it repeated were where the company is based, which areas it covers, what the monthly plan includes and how fast it responds. Reviews and star ratings never came up.

An office manager in Petaling Jaya types "Our office of 20 people keeps having IT problems, can you recommend a reliable IT support company in PJ?" The companies ChatGPT names come with links, mostly to their own websites.

What does AI read before it recommends an IT support company in Malaysia?

AI read IT support and managed IT (MSP) companies' own websites first. We asked ChatGPT 10 SME owner questions, twice each, about local IT support and Microsoft or AWS work. All 20 answers linked at least one provider's own site.

What ChatGPT read vs linked for 20 SME IT support questions (EasyFound test, 6 October 2026; CSV)
Source In its search results Linked in the answer
IT providers' own websites 20 answers 20 answers
IT directories such as Clutch 9 answers none
Microsoft or AWS pages 6 answers 6 answers
Wikipedia and Reddit 20 answers none

Own sites coming first and shortlists changing between asks match our earlier tests: see what sources ChatGPT cites and why ChatGPT gives a different answer every time. A short keyword question such as "best managed IT service provider in Kuala Lumpur" pulled directory links and bigger firms in a small 2 October check, the pattern our freight forwarder test shows most clearly.

Which facts does AI repeat about an IT support company?

AI repeated the practical facts an IT company publishes about its service:

  1. Where the company is based and which areas it covers. Every one of the 14 answers about a city or region said this. Half linked a page written for that one area, such as a Penang IT support page.
  2. Published response times and SLAs, quoted in 7 answers, like "within 2 hours for critical issues".
  3. What the plan includes and who it suits: a fixed monthly fee, how many users it covers, onsite visits, backups, cybersecurity, or a trade such as accounting firms or factories. Five answers quoted a published price.

What it didn't mention, in any of the 20 answers: reviews, star ratings or an ISO certificate. That's despite searching for reviews before writing 3 of them.

Can an IT company's own website make AI rank it lower?

Yes: in our test, one IT company's own JB page made AI rank it lower in both Johor Bahru answers. One answer said "its own site says its engineers are based in the Klang Valley and Melaka and that JB onsite visits are scheduled", and both put local firms first. AI reads your coverage claims both ways, so state them honestly.

Microsoft and AWS partner listings mattered to AI only when the question named the vendor, such as a Microsoft 365 email move. In our test, every answer about Microsoft 365, Azure or AWS linked a Microsoft or AWS page, and no other answer did. Four of those answers stated a provider's partner tier or designation, taken from an AWS Marketplace listing or the provider's own site. None of the general IT support answers mentioned one.

Microsoft says its scoring "ensures that customers who are searching for partners can trust Solution partner designations" (Microsoft Learn).

Does AI choose IT support companies the way ChatGPT says it does?

ChatGPT's own explanation didn't match what it did in our test. Asked this article's title twice through OpenAI's API, it answered from memory both times, without searching. One answer listed "Reviews, case studies, certifications, partnerships, customer references, and established history" as reputation signals. The same answer said "Claims that can be verified through reliable third-party sources generally carry more weight than unsupported marketing claims on the company's own site."

Its 20 real recommendations did close to the opposite: built from providers' own sites, with no directory links, reviews or ISO certificates. Our reading: watch what it does, not what it says it does.

What are the limits of our IT support test?

  • Why it chose. We saw what ChatGPT linked and repeated, not how it ranked. Most of it was each provider's own claim, as 3 answers noted.
  • The app and other AI tools. We used OpenAI's API on one day; the ChatGPT app can differ.
  • Service quality. This shows who AI names, not who fixes your server fastest.

Most of the work is on your own pages, area by area.

  1. Check what ChatGPT says about you before changing anything. EasyFound's free check uses questions like "Our factory office in Bayan Lepas has 40 PCs and the server keeps going down. Who can support us?"; we then walk you through the answers on a free call.
  2. Give each area you really serve its own page. Say where your engineers are based and how quickly they reach that area.
  3. Publish your response times and what each plan includes: users, onsite visits, backups and the trades you know best.
  4. State your exact Microsoft or AWS designation on the matching service page, and keep your partner directory listing the same.

If you'd rather hand this over, EasyFound's AI SEO service puts office owners' questions, in English, Malay or Chinese, to six AI tools and fixes the pages they read about your IT firm. It starts with the free check below.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT recommend other IT support companies in KL and not mine?

In EasyFound's test, ChatGPT chose IT support companies whose own websites answered the office owner's question. On 6 October 2026 we asked it 10 IT support questions an SME owner might type, twice each, with web search required. All 20 answers linked at least one provider's own website, and the facts it repeated were where the company is based, the areas it covers, what its monthly plan includes and its published response times. If your site doesn't state those facts plainly, ChatGPT has little to quote about you.

Do Clutch or other IT directories help ChatGPT recommend my IT company?

It depends on how the question is asked, in EasyFound's tests. For 10 chatty SME owner questions asked twice each (6 October 2026), directories such as Clutch were in ChatGPT's search results for 9 of the 20 answers but linked in none. A smaller 2 October check hints that short keyword questions differ: for 'best managed IT service provider in Kuala Lumpur', asked twice with web search optional, 8 of the 14 links in its answers pointed to directories (counting every link; the CSV counts each site once per answer). With so few answers and different settings, treat that as a hint, not proof.

Does being a Microsoft or AWS partner help my IT company get recommended by AI?

When the customer's question names the vendor, it showed up, in EasyFound's test. In all 6 answers to questions about Microsoft 365, Azure or AWS, ChatGPT linked a Microsoft or AWS page. Four of them stated a provider's partner tier or designation, taken either from an AWS Marketplace listing or from the provider's own website. In the 14 general IT support answers, it never mentioned a partner tier.

Do reviews help my IT company get recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in EasyFound's test. Across 20 answers to SME owners' IT support questions on 6 October 2026, ChatGPT never mentioned reviews, star ratings or an ISO certificate, even in the 3 answers where it searched for reviews first. It repeated what providers' own websites said instead: the areas they cover, their response times and what each plan includes. Reviews may still matter to the owner who reads them before calling you.

Our data: EasyFound, ChatGPT answers about IT support companies in Malaysia, October 2026. Main test: 10 SME owner questions, each asked twice on 6 October 2026 through OpenAI's Responses API, model chat-latest, not the ChatGPT app. Web search was required on every call, location was set to Malaysia, there was no chat history, and the system prompt asked ChatGPT to answer "the way ChatGPT would answer a consumer in Malaysia" and to return the IT providers it named as a separate list. Five questions were about the Klang Valley, one about Penang, one about Johor Bahru, two about Microsoft 365 or Azure and one about AWS. We merged spelling variants of one company. "In its search results" means pages ChatGPT's web search returned to it; "linked" means a link a reader sees in the answer; each source counts once per answer. Directories are B2B listing sites (such as Clutch, The Manifest and TechVendorIndex). What ChatGPT said about providers was coded by hand from the answer text. Short-question comparison: 3 answers from our 2 October 2026 industry test (same model, web search optional, location Malaysia, no system prompt): "best managed IT service provider in Kuala Lumpur" twice, and one chatty ransomware question once. Too few answers, with different settings, to count as more than a hint. Title test: this article's title asked twice on 6 October (web search optional, location Malaysia, no system prompt). Per-answer data (CSV). We don't name IT companies, because one day's answers are not a ranking.
