What's the difference between a mention and a citation in ChatGPT?

EasyFound · · 7 min read

TL;DR

A mention is ChatGPT naming your business in its answer. A citation is the link it gives to the page behind a statement. In EasyFound's September 2026 test of Malaysian buying questions through OpenAI's API, 55% of the times ChatGPT named a business, no page from that business's own site was cited in the same answer. Check both: the name is what customers see, the cited page is what you can fix.

You ask ChatGPT for an affordable accountant in KL, and your firm is in the list. Then you notice the little link next to your name opens another firm's price page.

A mention is ChatGPT naming your business in its answer. A citation is the link it gives to the page behind a statement. The two often come apart: ChatGPT can name you while citing someone else's page, or cite your page without naming you.

In our Malaysian test, more than half the times ChatGPT named a business, no page from that business's own site was cited in the same answer.

What's the difference between a mention and a citation in ChatGPT?

The difference between a mention and a citation in ChatGPT is what the customer sees versus where the answer came from. A third layer is easy to miss: pages ChatGPT's search found but didn't cite.

Three ways a business can appear in a ChatGPT answer that searched the web
Layer What it means Where you see it
Mentioned Your business's name is in the answer text The answer itself
Cited A page is linked as the source of a statement The small link after a sentence
Found, not cited The search returned the page, but the answer didn't link it Not linked in the answer; OpenAI's API lists them all

OpenAI's developer guide says the list of search results "returns the complete list of URLs the model consulted", unlike inline citations, "which show only the most relevant references"1. In the app, Sources shows "cited sources and other relevant links"2.

Yoast draws the same line: "AI brand mentions occur when an AI tool references your brand in responses, while citations support the information with sources"3.

What do a mention and a citation look like in one real ChatGPT answer?

One real ChatGPT answer about Malaysian accounting firms shows all three layers at once. A customer might type: "Can you recommend an affordable accounting firm in Malaysia? How much do they usually charge?"

  • Found: the search brought back 18 pages, mostly price pages and fee tables.
  • Named: five firms, listed as "firms with published pricing".
  • Named and cited: Firm A's price page carried most of the RM figures. Firm B's company-secretary page was linked for secretarial fees.
  • Named, not cited: Firms C, D and E. Their own pages were in the search results, yet their names sat under Firm A's link.
  • Cited, not named: two businesses that never appear in the text. A bookkeeping software company's fee calculator gave the yearly cost range; an advisory group's pricing page backed the tip to pick an MIA-registered accountant.

Two of the four pages it linked belonged to businesses the customer never saw named.

How often does ChatGPT mention a business without citing its website?

ChatGPT often mentioned a Malaysian business without citing that business's own website. In our test, 45% of mentions came with a page from the business's own site. The rest split two ways:

  • Own site not among the pages found: about half of all mentions. Our reading: the name came from another page or from ChatGPT's memory.
  • Own site found, not cited: 6% of mentions, as with Firms C, D and E.

By trade, hotels had their own site cited for about one in five mentions; hotel answers leaned on booking and review sites instead. The other four trades did better, at about three in five, though solar managed two in five.

The reverse, citing without naming, was rare in our test. More than nine in ten business websites ChatGPT cited belonged to a business it named. Most exceptions came from the accounting-fee question.

BuzzStream's larger study of four AI tools found the same lopsided pattern: "AI is far more likely to mention a brand than cite that brand's website"4. For GPT-5.4-mini, the model we used, 28.3% of brand mentions came with the brand's own site cited. And 92.7% of the brand sites it cited were named, close to our result. Their brands and questions differ, so treat both as rough guides.

Which matters more for my business, a ChatGPT mention or a citation?

In our view, a ChatGPT mention matters more for winning the customer, and a citation matters more for knowing what to fix. A customer acts on the name, link or no link.

The citation shows which page ChatGPT leaned on:

  1. Named, linked to your page: that page is working. Keep it current.
  2. Named, linked to someone else's page: the facts beside your name are credited to a page you don't control. Check what it says about you (what to do when it's a competitor's).
  3. Your page cited, name missing: your cost guide is doing the work for someone else's shortlist. Say plainly on it who you are, what you offer and where.
  4. Found, never cited: ChatGPT's search returned your page, but the answer linked another. That's a page to rewrite so it can be quoted.

What can't this test tell me about ChatGPT mentions and citations?

Three things about ChatGPT mentions and citations are outside this test:

  • The ChatGPT app. We used OpenAI's API, which may search and cite differently from the app.
  • What ChatGPT read. "Found" is what the search returned, not what ChatGPT read.
  • Whether the cited page backs the claim. We counted which page was linked, not whether it says what the answer credits to it.

How do I check if ChatGPT mentions or cites my business?

To check whether ChatGPT mentions or cites your business, look for your name and for the page linked beside it. Check more than once, because ChatGPT gives a different answer every time.

  1. Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says about your business, then go through it with us on a free call.
  2. Ask logged out, using the questions customers ask, in English, Malay or Chinese.
  3. Mark each answer: named or not, and whose page is linked next to your name.
  4. Fix the page cited beside your name: edit it if it's yours, or ask the site that owns it to correct it.

EasyFound, an AI SEO service for Malaysian businesses, tracks your mentions and the pages cited beside them across six AI tools, in English, Malay and Chinese, and puts the work into the pages behind those answers. Start with the free check below.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT mention my business but link to a different website?

Because a name and a link are separate things in a ChatGPT answer. It can name you after reading about you on another page, such as a directory, a review site or another firm's price list, and link that page instead of yours. In EasyFound's September 2026 test of Malaysian buying questions through OpenAI's API, 224 of the 404 times it named a business, no page from that business's own site was cited in the same answer.

Can ChatGPT cite my website without mentioning my business?

Yes. ChatGPT can use a figure or a tip from your page and never say your name. In EasyFound's September 2026 Malaysian test through OpenAI's API, this was uncommon: fewer than one in ten business websites cited in an answer belonged to a business the answer didn't name. Most came from one accounting-fee question, asked in three languages, where ChatGPT used cost guides, price pages, calculators and software companies' pages.

Can ChatGPT find my website and still not cite it?

Yes. ChatGPT's web search returns more pages than the answer links, and OpenAI's API guide says 'The number of sources is often greater than the number of citations.' In EasyFound's September 2026 test of Malaysian buying questions through OpenAI's API, ChatGPT cited about one in five of the pages its searches returned. For 25 of the 404 times it named a business, that business's own site was among the pages found but wasn't cited.

Is it better for my business to be mentioned or cited by ChatGPT?

You want both, for different reasons. A mention is what a customer reads and acts on, so it's closer to getting the enquiry. A citation shows which page ChatGPT relied on, so it tells you which page to fix or protect. If ChatGPT names you but links a directory or a competitor's page, the facts beside your name are credited to a page you don't control.

Our data: EasyFound, Mentions, citations and pages found in ChatGPT answers, a re-analysis of 135 answers to 45 Malaysian buying questions (15 in each of English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, across the five trades above), each asked three times on 24 September 2026 through OpenAI's Responses API with web search available, location Malaysia, model gpt-5.4-mini, default settings, no chat history. This is not the ChatGPT app. The test used short keyword questions; the example above is written the way people type. "Found" means the page was in the search results the API returns; "cited" means the answer linked it. A model listed the businesses in each answer, a name was kept only if it appears word for word, and government bodies, schemes, directories and generic phrases were left out: 404 mentions. Five answers didn't search; one of them named businesses, and its 8 mentions count as own site not found. Each business was matched to its own website (including free Google Sites pages) by hand. Download the per-answer results (CSV). We don't name the businesses, because one test isn't a ranking.
