How can a precision engineering or EMS company get recommended by ChatGPT? (Malaysia)
EasyFound · · 8 min read
Publish the specs buyers screen on, in plain English, on a page ChatGPT can read: tolerance, certificates, processes, volumes and town. In our Malaysian test, ChatGPT named about eight firms per answer, mostly linked to their own websites, and repeated specs from those pages. Asked in Malay or Chinese, it still searched mostly in English. The list changed every time, so aim to be in it often.
A precision engineering or EMS company in Malaysia earns a place on ChatGPT's supplier lists with the specs buyers screen on, written as plain English text on a page ChatGPT can read: tolerance, certificates, processes, volumes and town. In our test, ChatGPT named about eight firms per answer, mostly linked to their own websites, and repeated specs from those pages, such as a tolerance or a certificate. Asked in Malay or Chinese, it still searched mostly in English.
Before an RFQ goes out, a sourcing engineer in Bayan Lepas might build the supplier list by typing "Can you recommend a reliable CNC shop in Penang? We need 200 aluminium parts with tight tolerances." into ChatGPT, then ring whoever comes back. The stakes are real: Penang "recorded RM40.4 billion of machinery, equipment and parts export, contributing to almost half of the Malaysia’s total", says InvestPenang, quoting DOSM data. That export figure is for 2024.
How does ChatGPT build a supplier shortlist for a Malaysian precision engineering or EMS buyer?
ChatGPT builds it mostly from local machine shops, moulders and EMS firms, plus a few listed groups and global contract manufacturers' Penang plants. We asked six short buyer questions, three times each (CSV):
- Length: a median of eight firms per answer.
- Spread: 72 different firms across all of ChatGPT's answers.
- Top slot: no question got the same first firm in all three runs.
- Staying power: nine firms, across the six questions, made all three runs of a question. Most made one or two.
A single look is a weak signal, because ChatGPT reshuffles its lists from one run to the next.
Which spec lines does ChatGPT repeat about a Malaysian machine shop or EMS firm?
ChatGPT often repeats a concrete line from a firm's own pages, the source of most of its names: in 108 of the 131 times it named a firm, it linked that firm's own website (CSV).
The two Penang shops named most, Firm A and Firm C, each had one checkable line:
- A tolerance. Firm A came up in 6 of the 9 answers to our three Penang machining questions. Each time, ChatGPT quoted the micron figure printed on its website.
- A certificate. Firm C also came up in 6, every time from a company-profile PDF hosted on its own domain. Five of those answers mentioned its ISO 9001:2015 certificate.
The other 23 namings rested on someone else's page, or on none:
- LinkedIn company pages: 8.
- InvestPenang company profiles: 6.
- MIDA news or success-story articles: 4.
- Other pages, or no link at all: 5.
One Penang EMS company appeared in all three runs of the box-build question with only its InvestPenang profile behind it. Agency profiles weighed more in our overseas buyers test, which used another model and longer questions.
Does a Malaysian buyer get different CNC shops by asking ChatGPT in Malay or Chinese?
Not much: the answer comes back in Malay or Chinese, but ChatGPT's searches for Penang CNC shops stayed mostly in English.
- Malay: all seven searches were in English, apart from the place name "Pulau Pinang".
- Chinese: seven of ten searches were in English. Two were in Chinese, and the last was a bare site filter.
- Pages: every page linked for these two questions carried an English title, except one InvestPenang page in Chinese.
Four Penang shops turned up in answers to the English, Malay and Chinese machining questions alike; most other names shifted, as between runs. Our wider language test points the same way: the English page does the heavy lifting.
Would Gemini give a Malaysian precision engineering buyer the same shortlist?
Probably not, though our Gemini evidence is thin: its API kept returning "high demand" errors, leaving 8 answers, so read these as examples, not rates. Unlike ChatGPT, Gemini ran with no location setting.
For each question, most firms Gemini named were missing from ChatGPT's three answers. Two Gemini answers listed firms without searching; ChatGPT searched before all 18 of its answers.
Several Gemini answers opened with a "Tier-1" or listed-firms section; ChatGPT never sorted its lists by company size. Gemini also cited B2B directories, which ChatGPT didn't. ChatGPT had big names too: two of ChatGPT's three box-build answers opened with global contract manufacturers' Penang plants. Check each engine on its own.
Can a buyer trust the specs ChatGPT quotes about a Malaysian precision engineering firm?
No, not on ChatGPT's say-so: it repeated what firms publish, and we verified none of it. Other gaps:
- How many buyers ask AI. We saw what ChatGPT answers, not how often procurement teams use it.
- What the app would say. These came through OpenAI's API without chat history; the ChatGPT app may answer differently.
- A ranking. We don't name the firms, because a few test runs aren't a ranking.
What spec line should a Malaysian precision engineering or EMS company publish for ChatGPT?
Publish one line a buyer could paste into an RFQ, near the top of your homepage, as text, not an image. A made-up example of the shape, describing no real firm:
Example only (invented supplier): CNC milling and turning in aluminium and stainless steel, tolerance ± [your figure] on [which features]. ISO 9001 certificate no. [number], valid until [date]. Batches from prototype to [your annual volume]. [Your town], Penang.
Where a firm's page said only something like "high-precision CNC solutions", that phrase was all ChatGPT repeated (CSV). Include the certificate's number and expiry: a Chinese answer told buyers to ask for a supplier's "ISO 9001 证书编号、有效期", its number and validity.
- Start with our free check. We ask ChatGPT a buyer's question, say "Which plastic injection moulders in Selangor do their own tooling? We need a new mould and 20,000 parts a year.", then go through the suppliers it names with you on a free call.
- Write your own spec line from the example, and repeat its facts on each process page.
- Make your company profile readable: selectable text in the PDF, and its facts on a web page too.
- Re-ask your buyers' questions monthly, in English, Malay and Chinese: the shortlist rotates, so aim to be on it often.
EasyFound is an AI search visibility (GEO) tool built for Malaysian businesses. Run for a machine shop, moulder or EMS line, it puts buyers' sourcing questions to six AI engines in English, Malay, Mandarin and Manglish, then reports which suppliers each one shortlists and what it says about your firm. In our AI SEO service, our team takes that on for you and rewrites the spec lines buyers screen on.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a GEO service for manufacturers and machine shops in Malaysia?
Yes, and EasyFound is one: an AI search visibility (GEO) tool built for Malaysian businesses, which our team can also run for a manufacturer, so we're an interested party here. Whoever you hire, us included, should be able to show its working: check more than one AI tool, ask in English, Malay and Chinese, hand over the raw answers a buyer would read, and repeat each question several times. In our test, the first firm ChatGPT named changed between runs on every question, so a single screenshot proves nothing.
Why does ChatGPT recommend other CNC shops in Penang but not mine?
Usually its search didn't find a page of yours that matches the question, or the list simply moved. In EasyFound's October 2026 test, ChatGPT named about eight firms per answer and linked most of them to their own websites, so firms with a readable page of their own filled most of each list. The two Penang shops it named most often each had one checkable line it repeated: a tolerance figure for one, an ISO 9001:2015 certificate for the other. Ask the question several times before drawing conclusions, because no question got the same first name in all three runs.
Do I need a Chinese or Malay website for ChatGPT to recommend my machine shop?
Not necessarily for ChatGPT's recommendation lists, in EasyFound's test. Asked in Malay and in Chinese for a reliable CNC shop in Penang, ChatGPT replied in that language but ran its web searches mostly in English: every search for the Malay question, and seven of ten for the Chinese one. Four Penang shops were named in answers to the English, Malay and Chinese machining questions alike. An English page with clear specs did the work; a Chinese or Malay page can still help buyers who read it.
Is a LinkedIn page or InvestPenang profile enough for ChatGPT to find my factory?
It can be, but it's a thin backup. In EasyFound's test, 108 of the 131 times ChatGPT named a firm, it linked that firm's own website. Most of the rest leaned on LinkedIn company pages, InvestPenang company profiles or MIDA articles. One Penang EMS firm made all three runs of a box-build question on its InvestPenang profile alone, so keep that profile accurate. Your own site is where you control the wording ChatGPT repeats.

Our data: Every count here comes from answers saved on 14 October 2026, with no new AI calls: EasyFound, What ChatGPT and Gemini answered about precision engineering, moulding and EMS suppliers in Malaysia. EasyFound sells GEO work, so we have a stake in these numbers; the method is set out here so you can check them. The questions are EasyFound's six standard buyer questions for this industry, kept short and keyword-like rather than written as full chat sentences: a "best" precision machining company in Penang; a reliable CNC shop in Penang, asked in Malay and in Chinese; a European firm's low-volume, high-mix PCBA question; an injection moulder that does tooling and moulding; and a reliable EMS company in Penang for PCB assembly and box build. ChatGPT ran on OpenAI's Responses API (gpt-5.4-mini-2026-03-17) with web search on and approximate location Malaysia, three runs per question, giving 18 answers, all of which searched. Gemini ran on the Gemini API (gemini-3.8-flash) with Google Search grounding and no location setting; "503 high demand" errors through the day left one or two runs per question, 8 answers in all, two of which did not search. Neither set comes from the ChatGPT or Gemini apps. Counting rules: a firm is a company a buyer could hire or buy from, offered as an option in the answer; branches of one group count once; directories and agencies are excluded; "own website" includes PDFs on the firm's domain and one firm's free Google Sites page. ChatGPT named 131 firms across its 18 answers (72 different ones). Across the six questions, 89 firms were named at least once for a question, and 9 of them in all three runs. The Firm A and Firm C figures cover the 9 ChatGPT answers to the three Penang machining questions: the English "best precision machining company" question and the Malay and Chinese CNC questions. "Searched in English" was judged from the words of each search ChatGPT ran; a bare "site:my" search counts as neither language. The Gemini comparison draws on examples from its 8 answers only; the "Tier-1" sections are Gemini's own headings, and Gemini's sources are its search grounding, not links in its answer text. The earlier overseas buyers test is a separate set (6 October 2026, chat-latest, long questions from buyers abroad) and is not pooled with these answers. Download the per-answer data (CSV).
