Does posting on Reddit or Lowyat help ChatGPT recommend my business?
EasyFound · · 8 min read
Rarely, in our data, and it depends on your industry. ChatGPT's search often reads Reddit threads when Malaysians ask for a business, but it almost never links them. The few links went to questions about a named business's reviews, and to trades like solar and weddings where people swap real experiences. Post where your customers talk, but put the facts on your own site.
Rarely, in our data, and it depends heavily on your industry. When Malaysians asked ChatGPT for a business, its search often pulled up Reddit threads, but it almost never linked them. The few forum links went to questions about a named business's reviews, and to trades like solar and weddings where customers swap real experiences.
Plenty of owners answer questions on r/malaysia or Lowyat's forum and wonder if ChatGPT notices. It reads more than it shows.
How often does ChatGPT read or link Reddit and Lowyat for Malaysian businesses?
ChatGPT reads Reddit far more than it links it. We went through 1,292 saved ChatGPT answers to Malaysian questions from September and October 2026. Its search results list was saved for 1,008 of them.
| What we checked | Answers |
|---|---|
| Reddit thread in its search results | 382 |
| Lowyat forum thread in its search results | 10 |
| Searched Reddit or Lowyat on purpose | 3 |
| Linked a Reddit or Lowyat page | 8 |
In most of those answers, the threads came from Malaysian communities such as r/malaysia, r/malaysians and r/MalaysianPF. ChatGPT found them, then linked businesses' own sites and directories instead. That fits our earlier tests on the sources ChatGPT cites, aesthetic clinics and freight forwarders, where it linked Reddit zero times.
Those were smaller, separate tests. The 8 links in this larger set all came from other kinds of question, and none from clinic, freight or IT questions. Our clinic group here was sorted by keywords from several tests, so its counts differ from the clinic article's.
Which industries see Reddit or Lowyat in ChatGPT's answers?
The pattern changes a lot by industry. Reddit sat in the search results for almost every IT and freight question, yet those answers never linked it. The handful of links went to food, solar, weddings and travel, a car film shop and one renovation question.
| Industry | Reddit in search results | Linked a forum |
|---|---|---|
| IT and tech services | 60 of 66 | 0 |
| Freight and logistics | 27 of 29 | 0 |
| Clinics and health | 46 of 55 | 0 |
| Food and drink | 32 of 57 | 2 |
| Renovation and home services | 69 of 163 | 1 |
| Travel, weddings and events | 22 of 70 | 2 |
| Accounting, legal and company admin | 45 of 144 | 0 |
| Solar | 12 of 53 | 2 |
| Education | 17 of 49 | 0 |
| Questions about AI search itself | 38 of 298 | 0 |
Lowyat was narrower. Its forum threads turned up in 10 answers, mostly renovation (including a home EV charger question), plus a car workshop and a China cargo question. These counts only cover the industries in our tests, so don't read them as true for every trade.
When does ChatGPT actually link a Reddit or Lowyat thread?
ChatGPT linked a forum when a real customer's experience answered the question. That happened in two kinds of question:
- Reviews of a named business. For "is this bakery legit?"-style questions, ChatGPT linked a forum in 3 of 33 answers. It wrote things like "People on Malaysian Reddit have mentioned ordering from it." For one renovation contractor, it linked a Lowyat thread to say it had found no real reviews at all.
- Who to hire, in trades where people swap notes. Two solar answers linked Malaysian Reddit threads, one to say "Malaysian homeowner reports" backed an installer. Others linked threads on wedding venues, climbing packages and car film shops.
Out of 571 "who should I hire?" answers, only 5 linked a forum. None of the 543 answers to questions about AI search did.
Does forum talk still shape ChatGPT's answer without a link?
We can't prove it either way. In the 336 answers outside AI questions where Reddit was in the results but not linked, we found 8 that used crowd wording such as "often mentioned" or "people often praise", half of them about food. Those lines carried other links or none, so we can't tell whether the wording came from Reddit. Our reading: forum threads may shape the wording now and then, but the facts ChatGPT credits come from other pages.
Why does ChatGPT read Reddit but rarely link it?
Access isn't the problem, though how it gets in is unclear. The robots.txt Reddit served us on 7 October 2026, including when we asked as OAI-SearchBot, blocks every crawler from the whole site. Yet Reddit still turned up in 382 answers' search results.
One possible route is a deal. In May 2024, Reddit announced that "OpenAI will access Reddit's Data API" and "bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products"1. That could explain how ChatGPT sees Reddit despite the robots.txt. It says nothing about linking Reddit in answers, and our data shows it seldom does. Lowyat's robots.txt lets OpenAI's crawlers into its forum topics.
Gemini linked forums more. On the same 45 buying questions, asked three times each, Gemini linked Reddit or Lowyat in 8 of 135 answers, mostly renovation and solar. ChatGPT did so once.
We already rated "post on Reddit" as not reliable right now for getting cited, after a US study saw ChatGPT's Reddit citations drop.
What can't our data tell me about Reddit, Lowyat and ChatGPT?
- The ChatGPT app. We used OpenAI's API with web search, not the app people use.
- Uneven industries. Some groups are small, like freight and solar, and food answers were mostly about a few named shops.
- Training data. We measured search, not what ChatGPT learned from Reddit before.
How should I use Reddit and Lowyat if I want ChatGPT to recommend me?
Treat forums as a place to help customers, and your own site as the place for facts.
- Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says when someone asks, for example, "Which solar installer in Selangor is actually reliable? I want panels on my terrace house but I'm worried about after-sales." Then go through it with us on a free call.
- Answer forum questions honestly, as yourself. Reddit's rules say to "participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest" and not to spam2. The forum links ChatGPT used came from real customers, not businesses posting about themselves.
- Put the facts on your own site. Write down your prices, areas, warranty and hours on a page ChatGPT will quote, since that's what it linked instead of forums.
- Read what forums say about you. For reviews questions, ChatGPT may repeat one forum comment. Fix the real complaint, and reply calmly where it was posted.

Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT read Reddit when it recommends a business in Malaysia?
Often, through its search. In EasyFound's 1,292 ChatGPT answers to Malaysian questions (7 September to 6 October 2026, OpenAI's API with web search), Reddit threads were in the search results for 382 of the 1,008 answers whose results list was saved. IT support, freight and clinic questions pulled up Reddit most. ChatGPT linked a Reddit page in only 8 answers.
Does ChatGPT cite Lowyat forum threads?
Very rarely in our data. Lowyat forum threads were in ChatGPT's search results for 10 of 1,292 Malaysian answers, mostly renovation questions, and it linked one, to say it had found no real reviews of the contractor asked about. Lowyat's robots.txt (fetched 7 October 2026) doesn't block OpenAI's crawlers from forum topics.
Can I post on Reddit to get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Not as a tactic. Reddit's rules ask users to 'participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest' and not to spam. In our data, the Reddit links ChatGPT did use were real customers describing their own experience, such as homeowners who had installed solar. Answer questions honestly as yourself, and put your facts on your own site.
Does the OpenAI and Reddit partnership mean ChatGPT will cite Reddit posts?
It doesn't promise that. Reddit's May 2024 announcement says OpenAI will access Reddit's Data API and 'bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products'. It says nothing about how often ChatGPT links Reddit in answers, and in EasyFound's Malaysian data ChatGPT linked Reddit in 8 of 1,292 answers.
Does Gemini cite Reddit or Lowyat more than ChatGPT?
In our matched test, yes. We asked both the same 45 Malaysian buying questions three times on 1 October 2026. Gemini linked a Reddit or Lowyat page in 8 of 135 answers, mostly renovation and solar questions; ChatGPT linked one in 1 of 135. Neither linked a forum for company secretary or accounting questions.

No new AI calls were made for this article; every figure is recounted from answers already saved in our answer bank. ChatGPT: 1,292 answers with location set to Malaysia from 7 September to 6 October 2026, through OpenAI's Responses API with web search, mostly model gpt-5.4-mini. This is not the ChatGPT app. 1,015 searched the web, and the search results list was saved for 1,008; the industry table uses those 1,008. Industries were assigned by keyword rules on each question and checked by hand; a small "other" group (24 answers) isn't shown in the table. "Linked" means a URL citation in the answer. Our clinic, freight and ChatGPT-sources articles used separate, smaller tests with their own counts; this article's clinic and freight groups are keyword groups drawn from other tests, which is why, for example, its clinic counts differ from the clinic article's. Gemini: 157 answers from 1 to 6 October 2026 (Google Search grounding, no location setting); the matched comparison is 45 buying questions on renovation, solar, company secretary and accounting, and Penang hotels, in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, asked three times through each API on 1 October 2026. Robots.txt files for reddit.com and forum.lowyat.net were fetched on 7 October 2026, as a plain browser and as OAI-SearchBot; Reddit may serve verified crawlers a different file, which we can't see.
