Does a Facebook page help ChatGPT recommend my business?
EasyFound · · 6 min read
A Facebook page does very little to help ChatGPT recommend your business. Facebook blocks the crawler ChatGPT's search uses, so ChatGPT almost never cites Facebook pages: just 3 times in over a thousand Malaysian answers we checked. Google's Gemini cites Facebook more often. Keep your page, but put your key facts on a website ChatGPT can read.
A Facebook page does very little to help ChatGPT recommend your business. In the Malaysian answers we checked, ChatGPT almost never cited a Facebook page, and never the page of a business it recommended. Facebook's own robots.txt keeps out the crawler ChatGPT's search depends on.
That matters here because plenty of Malaysian home bakers, aircond technicians and tuition teachers run their whole business from a Facebook page. Gemini is the exception, and it reads Facebook in a way most owners wouldn't expect.
How often does ChatGPT cite Facebook pages for Malaysian businesses?
In our data, ChatGPT almost never cites Facebook pages when it answers Malaysian questions. We went through 1,098 saved ChatGPT answers to Malaysian questions from September and October 2026. Only 3 cited a Facebook page, and Instagram never appeared.
None of the three was a Malaysian business it recommended:
- Two answers about a Malaysian bakery cited an unrelated Arabic-language pastry shop's post.
- One SPM tuition answer cited a person's post listing school exam results.
We already found that ChatGPT's cited pages lean on businesses' own websites, and that Facebook was absent from them. This newer, larger set shows the same thing.
Can ChatGPT read my Facebook page at all?
Mostly no: Facebook's robots.txt shuts out OAI-SearchBot, the crawler OpenAI uses for ChatGPT search. When we fetched Facebook's robots.txt on 3 October 2026, it gave path-by-path rules to GPTBot, Googlebot, Bingbot and others. OAI-SearchBot isn't named, so it falls under the catch-all rule, which blocks the whole site. Instagram's robots.txt blocks it the same way.
OpenAI is plain about what that means. Its crawler page says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links"1.
ChatGPT's search still turned up Facebook links. It returned at least one in 33 of the answers where we saved its search results, most of them tuition questions. Many were off-topic: government notices, Meta's own help pages, and posts in Bengali, Arabic or Thai.
A Shah Alam renovation question, for example, brought back a Bangladeshi bus company's post. Our reading: search matched words in page names or links, which fits OAI-SearchBot not being allowed to read the pages and how ChatGPT's search depends on OpenAI's own crawler. ChatGPT cited just three of them.
Why does Gemini cite Facebook when ChatGPT doesn't?
Our reading: Gemini can cite Facebook because it searches with Google, and Facebook's robots.txt lets Google's crawler into parts of the site. Google says grounding with Google Search "connects the Gemini model to real-time web content"2. Facebook's robots.txt gives Googlebot the same path rules as GPTBot, OpenAI's training crawler.
Facebook also lists 186 sitemaps for search engines in its robots.txt. Of those, 171 have "group" in the file name. That fits what Gemini cited when we asked both tools the same 45 Malaysian buying questions on 1 October (CSV):
| What was cited | ChatGPT | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Any Facebook page | 0 of 135 answers | 15 of 135 answers |
| A community group post | 0 | 9 |
| A business's own Facebook page | 0 | 5 |
| Any Instagram page | 0 | 0 |
Six of the group-post answers drew on one solar DIY group. Most of the Facebook answers, 9 of 15, were to questions in Bahasa Malaysia.
A business's own page helped in only some of those answers. In all 3 renovation answers, Gemini named the firm whose page it cited. In the other 2, it used a company-secretary firm's post for its fee figures without naming the firm.
Facebook was still a small source for Gemini. Counting each site once per answer, it cited businesses' own websites 410 times in the same answers, against 15 for Facebook. The wider Gemini-versus-ChatGPT comparison shows how differently the two tools pick businesses.
Is a Facebook page enough for ChatGPT to recommend a Malaysian business?
No. A Facebook-only business is relying on a page ChatGPT's search isn't allowed to read. ChatGPT can still name you from other pages that mention you, such as directories, news or a supplier's list. Your own page is the one you control, so put your facts on a page it can read.
Your Facebook page still earns its place. Followers see it, Gemini can reach it, and what customers say about you in public local groups can reach Gemini too.
What can't our data tell me about Facebook and ChatGPT?
- The ChatGPT app. We used OpenAI's API. OpenAI says robots.txt rules "may not apply" when a user asks ChatGPT to open a page, but that is a different route from search.
- A designed sample. These are saved answers from many of our tests, so the question mix reflects what we happened to test, not Malaysian businesses as a whole.
- The future. Robots.txt files change, and Facebook could name OAI-SearchBot tomorrow. Our copy is from 3 October 2026.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business if it runs on Facebook?
The fix is small: keep the Facebook page, and give ChatGPT a page it can read.
- Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says when customers ask about your trade, then go through it with us on a free call.
- Publish one public page with your key facts: services, areas, prices and contact. A free page works if ChatGPT can reach it, as our website analysis found.
- Make the two match. Use the same business name, phone and address on the page and on Facebook, and link each to the other, so ChatGPT can tell it's you.
- Answer openly in local groups. When someone asks for a recommendation in your trade, reply openly as the business; threads like these were what Gemini cited most.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT see my Facebook business page?
Mostly not. Facebook's robots.txt (checked 3 October 2026) gives rules to GPTBot, Googlebot, Bingbot and others, but doesn't name OAI-SearchBot, the crawler OpenAI uses for ChatGPT search. Unnamed bots fall under a rule that blocks the whole site. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot 'will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers'. In EasyFound's Malaysian data, ChatGPT cited a Facebook page in 3 of 1,098 answers.
My business only has a Facebook page. Will ChatGPT ever recommend me?
It can still name you if other pages it can read mention you, such as directories, news or a free website. But your Facebook page itself is unlikely to be the source. In EasyFound's Malaysian data, none of the 3 Facebook pages ChatGPT cited belonged to a business it recommended.
Does Instagram help ChatGPT recommend my business?
Not in EasyFound's data. ChatGPT and Gemini cited Instagram zero times in the saved Malaysian answers we checked. Instagram's robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot from the whole site (checked 3 October 2026).
Does Gemini use Facebook posts to recommend businesses?
Sometimes. In EasyFound's 1 October 2026 test of 45 Malaysian buying questions, Gemini cited Facebook in 15 of 135 answers, mostly posts in community groups such as a solar DIY group, and mostly in Bahasa Malaysia. A business's own Facebook page was cited in 5 answers. ChatGPT cited Facebook in none of its 135 answers to the same questions.
Should I delete my Facebook page and build a website instead?
No. Keep the Facebook page for the customers who follow you and for Gemini, which does read Facebook through Google Search. Add a simple public page that states your services, area and prices, because that is what ChatGPT can read and quote.

Our data: EasyFound, Facebook and Instagram in ChatGPT and Gemini answers to Malaysian questions, October 2026. We made no new AI calls: every figure comes from saved answers in our answer bank. ChatGPT: 1,098 answers to Malaysian questions from 3 September to 2 October 2026, through OpenAI's Responses API with web search and location set to Malaysia, mostly model gpt-5.4-mini. This is not the ChatGPT app. Its search results list was saved for 872 of them. Matched test: 45 buying questions (Penang hotels, KL renovation, solar installers, company secretary, accounting and tax; 15 each in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese), asked three times on 1 October 2026 through each API. Gemini used gemini-3.8-flash with Google Search grounding and no location setting. We counted pages cited in each answer and sorted the Facebook pages by hand; the own-website figure uses the Gemini-versus-ChatGPT test's definitions. Facebook's and Instagram's robots.txt were fetched on 3 October 2026; Facebook's was fetched again as OAI-SearchBot, with identical results. Download the counts (CSV). We don't name the businesses or pages.
