Does ranking on Bing help my business show up in ChatGPT?

A friend in your business WhatsApp group says ChatGPT runs on Bing, so you should get your shop onto Bing. You've never opened Bing in your life. Ranking on Bing on its own isn't what gets you into ChatGPT: OpenAI uses Bing for some accounts, but whether ChatGPT can show your content depends on OpenAI's own crawler.

Our server logs show the gap. Over five days, OpenAI's search crawler made 49 requests to our website. Bing's made two, and neither was for an article.

Does ChatGPT use Bing to search?

ChatGPT uses Bing in some places, not everywhere. For ChatGPT search in general, OpenAI says it uses "third-party search providers"². Its general help page points users to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for how those providers handle queries³. Its help page for health-data workspaces names Bing as an example of a third-party search provider¹².

Resoneo's team never saw Bing on their own accounts, though a collaborator saw it on a ChatGPT Team account⁶. So "ChatGPT uses Bing" was well supported until early 2025. Today it's documented for some accounts, and how much other accounts use it isn't public.

How does ChatGPT search find a business's website?

ChatGPT search finds a business's website through several sources, and OpenAI's own crawler is the one you control. When a customer asks something like "Can you recommend a good aircon service in Puchong? Mine is leaking water.", ChatGPT usually searches and writes its own queries. Those go to:

• OpenAI's own index. In July, every business and place result Resoneo could trace on free accounts' quick answers came from it⁶.
• Third-party search providers, which can include Bing, plus partner content².
• Data feeds for maps and places, including Yelp, TripAdvisor and Google Maps⁶.

Whichever source finds your page, OpenAI's rule for showing it is the same: let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, firewall included³. OpenAI adds: "Placement is not guaranteed."

What did our logs and a Bing check show about ChatGPT and Bing?

On our own website, easyfound.co, ChatGPT's search crawler visited far more often than Bing's. We read our server logs for 25 to 30 September 2026, the window of our llms.txt check extended by half a day:

• OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) made 49 requests, all from OpenAI's published IP addresses.
• Bingbot made 2: our robots.txt file, and the key file that proves we own our IndexNow pings. It fetched no articles from our server.

We also checked 37 pages that OpenAI's API, with web search on, cited when we asked about Malaysian contractors, dentists, bakeries, aircon servicing, SPM tuition, wedding photographers and prices. Bing had 31 of them, and free Google Sites pages were among them. For six of the pages, Bing also showed a local business listing in a Malaysian town.

Our reading: Bing holds most of the pages ChatGPT cited in our test, and OpenAI's crawler also fetches sites itself. That doesn't show where any one ChatGPT answer's results came from.

Is Bing still worth setting up for my Malaysian business?

Setting up Bing is still worth it for a Malaysian business, because it's free and reaches customers ChatGPT's main route may not:

• Corporate and campus buyers. People on ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu can get Bing web results⁴. That matters for a Shah Alam printing shop or a campus caterer.
• Bing Webmaster Tools. Its AI Performance report shows citations across "Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations"⁷. Microsoft doesn't say ChatGPT is one of them.
• Bing Places. You can "link your Google My Business account" to import your listing⁹, so setup is quick, though Bing still has to verify you.
• IndexNow. It tells Bing about new or changed pages straight away. OpenAI isn't among the participating engines listed on IndexNow's own site⁸, so your pings don't go to OpenAI directly. They help ChatGPT only where it uses Bing.

What can't this tell me about ChatGPT and Bing?

• Today's exact mix. ChatGPT's server data stopped labelling each result's search engine after 21 July 2026, and Resoneo is one team. OpenAI can change providers without telling anyone.
• Every page. Our Bing check was a small, one-day sample through OpenAI's API, not the ChatGPT app, and Bing's search can miss pages it does hold. We didn't check Google.
• Every site. Our logs cover one small website.

How do I make sure ChatGPT can find my business, Bing or not?

Each door is cheap to open, so you don't need to know which one ChatGPT used today.
