Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor's visa agency instead of mine? (Malaysia)
EasyFound · · 8 min read
In EasyFound's test, ChatGPT rarely recommended any employment pass or visa agency in Malaysia. It told employers to apply through the Immigration Department's ESD and MYXpats Centre, and the few firms it did name came from government registers, not from agency websites. So put your licence, the ESD work you handle, your fees and your office address on your own pages, then check what ChatGPT says.
In our test, ChatGPT named no visa agency, yours or a competitor's, in 16 of 18 answers. It sent employers to the Immigration Department's Expatriate Services Division (ESD) and MYXpats Centre instead, saying the company applies for the employment pass itself. The two answers that did name firms copied them from government registers: JTKSM's licensed private employment agencies, and Immigration's authorised Premium Visa Programme agents. No answer cited an agency's own website. Our reading: a competitor gets named when ChatGPT can check it on an official list, and possibly in the follow-up shortlist it kept offering, which we didn't test.
We can see who was named, not who was left out, so we compare what the named firms had in common (CSV).
Does ChatGPT send Malaysian employers to a visa agency or to ESD and MYXpats for a new employment pass?
For a new employment pass, ChatGPT sent Malaysian employers to ESD and MYXpats, not to a visa agency, in every answer to our two new-pass questions. Each said the employer, not the foreign hire, files through ESD's system. Asked which agency can help, it named MYXpats Centre itself in every run; private help appeared only as a type, such as a "licensed immigration consultant".
| Employer's question | Runs that named a firm (of 3) | Where ChatGPT pointed instead |
|---|---|---|
| Employment pass agent in Malaysia | 0 | ESD and MYXpats |
| How to apply for a foreign hire, and which agency can help | 0 | MYXpats Centre itself |
| Best visa agency in KL for expat work permits | 1 | Checks to make before hiring an agency |
| Renewing an employment pass and dependant pass | 0 | The company's own ESD account |
| Ejen permit kerja ekspatriat di Kuala Lumpur | 0 | No web search; an offer to list agents |
| 马来西亚工作准证代办公司推荐 (work permit agency recommendations) | 1 | ESD and MYXpats, or JTKSM's licence list |
What does ChatGPT tell a Malaysian employer renewing an employment pass and dependant pass?
For renewals, ChatGPT told Malaysian employers that the company renews both passes through its own ESD account, and named no agency in any of its three runs. One run said: "I can't safely recommend a specific agency without checking current listings and legitimacy."
Every renewal answer then offered to find agencies, two of them by city. Overall, ChatGPT offered a shortlist in 14 of 18 answers, a follow-up we didn't send.
What kind of visa agency does ChatGPT name when a Malaysian employer asks for the best one?
When a Malaysian employer asked for the best visa agency in KL, ChatGPT named firms in only one of three runs. That run took three KL firms from the Immigration Department's list of authorised Premium Visa Programme agencies, a different scheme from the employment pass.
The other two runs listed checks to make instead:
- licence, registration or authorisation;
- clear fees and turnaround;
- recent reviews or client references;
- an office in KL, and dependant pass support.
Two of the three runs warned against agencies promising guaranteed approval.
Asked in Chinese, ChatGPT ran every search in English, the pattern our language study found for most Chinese questions. A run named four firms from JTKSM's list of licensed private employment agencies. Asked in Malay, it didn't search and named no one.
What did ChatGPT repeat about the visa agencies it named in Malaysia?
ChatGPT repeated registration facts about the firms it named on 18 October; an earlier answer from a different model repeated agencies' own service claims. On 2 October, chat-latest answered "best employment pass agent in Malaysia" by naming five agencies, each linked to its own homepage. It is one answer to a different question: an example, kept apart from the 18.
| Fact repeated | 18 Oct: 7 firms in 2 answers | 2 Oct: 5 agencies in 1 answer |
|---|---|---|
| Where the name came from | Government lists | Each agency's own homepage |
| Licence or registration | Licence number, category and dates (4 firms) | None quoted |
| ESD, MDEC or MIDA work | None | ESD work for all 5; MDEC and MIDA for 1 |
| Years in business | None | 2 agencies |
| Fees | None | 1 agency, for publishing its pricing |
| Location | Based in KL, per the list (3 firms) | None |
| Dependant passes | None | 3 agencies |
| Processing time | None | None |
The register facts had a catch: ChatGPT explained that category C licences cover foreign employees, then listed a category A firm. Our reading: being on a list didn't mean the firm fitted the job.
What does your competitor's page tell ChatGPT that your visa agency's page may not?
Named firms could be checked on a register; in the earlier answer, the agencies' own sites spelled out their ESD work. Give ChatGPT both.
- See the answer your clients get. EasyFound's free check shows what ChatGPT tells an HR manager who asks, say, "We're hiring an engineer from India for our Bangsar office. Which agency can handle his employment pass and his wife's dependant pass?" We then go through it with you on a free call.
- Write your licences as text, as the register shows them. If you hold a JTKSM private employment agency licence, give its number, category and validity dates; JTKSM says licence C covers job placement for a "non-citizen employee within Malaysia" (JTKSM). Add your SSM number.
- Describe your role without borrowing ESD's. ESD and MYXpats "DO NOT appoint nor authorise any third-party individuals or private agencies to represent or conduct ANY operations or business dealings on behalf of either ESD or MYXpats" (ESD notice, 8 March 2023). Say what you do for the employer: ESD company registration, preparing pass applications for the company's ESD account, renewals and dependant passes. ESD's own FAQ names a "Private Employment Agency" among those who may submit a Section 60K application, the JTKSM approval to hire a foreign employee (Xpats Gateway FAQ).
- Give each pass its own page, with fees and timing. Separate your fee from government fees, quote ESD's published processing times, and never promise approval.
- Put your office address and the areas you serve in text, such as KL, the Klang Valley, Penang or Johor Bahru.

Frequently asked questions
Who can help my employment pass agency show up in ChatGPT in Malaysia, and which GEO service is best for visa agents?
There is no fair public comparison of AI visibility services for visa and employment pass agencies, so we can't point you to a best one, and EasyFound offers this work itself. Judge any provider by whether it shows you ChatGPT's real answers to employers' questions, each asked several times, in the words employers actually use. Distrust a promised spot: in EasyFound's test of 18 answers to Malaysian employer questions, ChatGPT named a firm in just two.
Why does ChatGPT tell employers to go to MYXpats instead of using an agent?
Because, in EasyFound's Malaysian test, the pages it cited were government pages, mostly the Immigration Department's own. In 15 of 18 answers to employers' employment pass questions, ChatGPT said the pass goes through the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) and MYXpats Centre, and every answer that searched cited only government pages. Our reading is that ESD's pages answer the process question well, so an agency needs a page answering a different one: what it handles for the employer.
Does being on the JTKSM private employment agency list help ChatGPT name my agency?
It did once in EasyFound's test. Asked in Chinese to recommend a work permit agency in Malaysia, ChatGPT named firms from JTKSM's official licence list in one of three runs, quoting each firm's licence number, category and validity dates. One answer can't show that a listing causes a recommendation. If you hold a JTKSM licence, write its number and category on your own website too.
Can my visa agency say it is an authorised MYXpats or ESD agent?
Not as a representative of ESD or MYXpats. Their 8 March 2023 notice says ESD and MYXpats "DO NOT appoint nor authorise any third-party individuals or private agencies to represent or conduct ANY operations or business dealings on behalf of either ESD or MYXpats." Describe the work you do for the employer instead, such as ESD company registration and preparing pass applications for the company's ESD account. This is general information, not legal advice; check your wording with ESD.

Our data: EasyFound, 18 ChatGPT answers to six Malaysian employer questions about employment pass and visa agencies, each asked three times on 18 October 2026 through OpenAI's Responses API (gpt-5.4-mini-2026-03-17, web search available, approximate location Malaysia). That is the developer API, not the ChatGPT app, which can answer differently. Four questions were in English, one in Malay and one in Chinese, all short and typed like searches. ChatGPT searched in 15 answers; all 15 cited only government pages, from the Immigration Department (including ESD and MYXpats), JTKSM and MIDA. The three Malay answers didn't search, and the Chinese answers' nine search queries were all in English. We didn't test Gemini. We also asked ChatGPT this article's title twice the same way; one run searched and cited only OpenAI's help pages, the other didn't search, and neither is in the counts.
We read every answer in full and hand-coded it. A business is a firm an employer could hire; MYXpats Centre, the official processing centre, counts as the official channel, not a business. The 18 answers named seven firms, all in two answers; the median answer named none. "Sent to ESD and MYXpats" means the answer said the pass goes through them (15 of 18). "Cited" means linked in the answer text. The 2 October answer (model chat-latest, a different question wording) is a separate row in the CSV and is never pooled with the 18. Labels replace names because three runs of six questions are a sample, not a ranking. Download the per-answer data (CSV).
EasyFound sells AI visibility checks and the work that follows, so we gain if visa agencies act on this; weigh our advice with that in mind.
