What is AEO, and does my Malaysian business need it?

EasyFound · · 7 min read

TL;DR

AEO, answer engine optimisation, means improving how AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews understand, cite and recommend your business. If your customers ask AI before they choose a supplier, yes, your Malaysian business needs it, and it builds on the SEO you already do. One catch: in EasyFound's September 2026 test, ChatGPT read AEO questions that mentioned Malaysia as the customs scheme, Authorised Economic Operator, in 34 of 36 answers. Adding 'digital marketing' or 'SEO' to the question switched it to answer engine optimisation in all 6 answers.

AEO, answer engine optimisation, means improving how AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews understand, cite and recommend your business. If your customers ask AI before they choose who to buy from, yes, your Malaysian business needs it. It isn't a replacement for SEO: it builds on a website search engines can already read.

One catch: in Malaysia, AEO is also the name of a customs programme, Authorised Economic Operator. In our test of 26 September 2026, 34 of 36 ChatGPT answers to AEO questions naming Malaysia were about customs, including this exact question. Adding "digital marketing" or "SEO" to the question got the AI search meaning in all 6 answers (download the data).

What is AEO (answer engine optimisation)?

AEO is the work of getting your business named in the answer when someone asks an AI tool a question, instead of only ranking as a link. When a customer types "Which renovation contractor in Shah Alam is good for a condo kitchen?" into ChatGPT, the AI writes an answer and names a few contractors. AEO is about being one of them, with the facts about you stated correctly.

Google describes AEO and GEO as "terms you may see used to describe work specifically focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences"1.

What is the difference between AEO, SEO and GEO?

AEO and GEO overlap heavily, and many people use them interchangeably, but they aren't identical. AEO covers any direct answer: Ahrefs defines it as making content visible to "AI systems that deliver direct answers, whether that's Google's AI Overviews, voice assistants, or LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude"2. GEO was named in a 2023 research paper from Princeton and IIT Delhi, and focuses on answers that generative AI writes from several sources3.

All three build on the same foundation. Google's view is that optimising for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO"1.

SEO, AEO and GEO compared
SEO AEO GEO
Stands for Search engine optimisation Answer engine optimisation Generative engine optimisation
Where you show up The list of links on Google or Bing Direct answers: featured snippets, voice assistants, Google's AI Overviews, AI chat Answers written by generative AI: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity
What winning looks like Your page ranks and gets clicked Your page is lifted as the answer Your business is named or cited inside the AI's answer
What helps most A readable site, relevant pages, links from other sites A clear answer in the first lines under each question heading Specific facts, statistics and quotes AI can cite. The GEO paper found adding statistics and quotations raised a source's visibility in AI answers3

For a small business the practical work is the same: a site AI can read, and pages that state your facts plainly.

Does my Malaysian business need AEO?

Your Malaysian business needs AEO if customers compare options before they contact anyone, because more of that comparing now happens inside AI answers. It matters less if nearly all your customers walk in or come by word of mouth and never look you up.

When AEO is worth your time
Your situation Do you need AEO? Why
Customers search or compare before they call (clinics, tuition centres, renovation, accounting, solar, B2B services) Yes They can ask AI for a shortlist, and you're either on it or not
You already get customers from Google search Yes, and you're halfway there Google says AI search runs on the same foundations as SEO
Your website blocks AI crawlers, or has no website Fix that first AI can't recommend what it can't read
All your customers are walk-ins or regulars who never search Not yet There's no search to show up in
You import or export goods Different AEO That's the customs certification. Ask the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

In our analysis of the pages ChatGPT cited for Malaysian buying questions, businesses' own websites were the largest single source (details). A site AI can read is where AEO starts.

How do I start with AEO for my business?

Start by checking what AI already says about you, then fix what stops it reading and quoting your site. Five steps:

  1. Check what ChatGPT says today. Ask the questions your customers ask, such as "best [your service] in [your area]", and note whether you're named and whether the details are right.
  2. Make sure AI can read your website. A firewall setting, a robots.txt rule or pages that only load with JavaScript can hide your site. We've listed five checks for why ChatGPT can't see a website.
  3. State your key facts as plain text. What you do, where, who for, how you charge, and why customers can trust you, on ordinary public pages rather than in images or PDFs.
  4. Answer real questions under clear headings. Write each heading as a question a customer asks, and answer it in the first sentence underneath.
  5. Check again every month. AI answers change from one run to the next, so one check is a snapshot, not a verdict.

Structured data (schema markup) helps but isn't a shortcut. Google says it "isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add"1.

How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my business?

You can't tell by asking ChatGPT yourself. The ChatGPT app remembers your chats, so it answers you differently from a customer who has never heard of you. This article's own question shows how far apart answers can be: with no chat history, ChatGPT answered about customs, while Google's AI Overviews explained answer engine optimisation. What your customer sees depends on the tool and on what it knows about them.

Three things hide the real picture from business owners:

  • Your own ChatGPT is personalised. It knows your business, your industry and what you've asked before. Your customers' ChatGPT doesn't.
  • One answer is a snapshot. Ask the same question twice and ChatGPT can name different businesses.
  • Ranking on Google doesn't carry over. A page can rank well and still not be the one AI quotes.

To know for sure, ask the questions your customers ask, with no chat history, several times, in each AI tool they use, and note who gets named. That's what our free AI visibility check does for you.

What can't this test tell me about AEO and my business?

  • Your own ChatGPT. We tested with no chat history, the way a new customer asks. Your own logged-in app may answer differently.
  • Other AI tools in depth. We tested ChatGPT systematically. Our Google AI Overviews check was a single check, not a full test.
  • Tomorrow. AI answers change. We'll repeat this and publish what changes.

Whatever you call it, AEO comes down to one question: when your customers ask ChatGPT who to buy from, does it name you? Request your free AI visibility check below. We'll show you what AI tells your customers about your business today, and the first gap to fix.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for in marketing?

In marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimisation: improving how AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews understand, cite and recommend a business. In Malaysia the same letters also name a customs programme, Authorised Economic Operator, so say 'answer engine optimisation' in full when it matters.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap heavily, but they aren't identical. AEO (answer engine optimisation) covers any direct answer, including featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers. GEO (generative engine optimisation) was named in a 2023 research paper and focuses on answers written by generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Google treats both as SEO.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Google says that from its point of view, optimising for generative AI search 'is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO'. AEO builds on a website search engines can already read, then makes sure the facts customers ask about are stated plainly enough for AI to quote.

Does a small business in Malaysia need AEO certification?

AEO certification is the customs programme, Authorised Economic Operator, run by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for businesses in international trade. It has nothing to do with AI search. If you don't import or export, you don't need it. If you do, check the details with Customs directly.

Why does ChatGPT say AEO is a customs scheme?

Because in Malaysia AEO is also an official Customs programme with its own website. In EasyFound's September 2026 test, ChatGPT read AEO questions that mentioned Malaysia as the customs scheme in 34 of 36 answers. Adding 'digital marketing' or 'SEO' to the question got the answer engine optimisation meaning in all 6 answers.
