GEO agency or GEO software: which does a small business need?
EasyFound · · 7 min read
It depends on who will make the fixes. Most GEO software asks AI tools your customers' questions and reports who gets named, but someone still has to change your pages. Software fits when a person on your team has time every month and wants to see the numbers often. With no one to do the work, an agency or done-for-you service usually fits better. Either way, check which languages and AI tools are covered.
It depends on who will make the fixes. Most GEO software asks AI tools like ChatGPT your customers' questions and reports who gets named, but it doesn't change your website. If someone on your team has a few hours a month to act on it, software can be enough; if no one does, a GEO agency or done-for-you service usually fits better.
GEO, short for generative engine optimisation, means getting AI tools to name your business with the right facts. For doing it yourself, see agency or DIY; for whether to start at all, see is AI SEO worth it.
What does a GEO agency do that GEO software doesn't?
A GEO agency makes the changes to your website; GEO software mostly measures what AI tools say and suggests changes. In the four widely used GEO tools we read, none changed the customer's website (what they cover). The Malaysian agency packages we read that set out their scope all included work on your pages or listings, such as rewriting pages, adding structured data or writing new content each month.
| What happens | Self-serve GEO software | GEO agency or done-for-you service |
|---|---|---|
| Who picks the questions | You, sometimes from the tool's suggestions | The provider: ask to see the list |
| Who asks the AI tools | The software, often every day | The provider, often monthly or quarterly |
| Who changes your website | You, or someone you pay | The provider |
| Which AI tools are checked | Set by your plan | Often two to four named: ask which |
| Which languages are checked | Usually the language you type the questions in | Varies by provider, so ask |
| How you see results | Charts and raw answers in an online account | A report, usually monthly |
| How long you commit | Monthly plans on the tools we read | Month to month up to six months on the packages we read |
| What you have to bring | Time every month to act on it | Website access and answers about your business |
A done-for-you GEO service is an agency with a narrower job: it checks, fixes and reports, with nothing for you to learn.
Neither kind can promise you a ranking. Google's guide to AI search is blunt: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems."1
When is GEO software enough for a small business?
Self-serve GEO software, which is mainly monitoring, is enough for a small business or SME when someone will read its report and change the website every month. Its strengths are repetition and control: you pick the questions, see the raw answers yourself and can stop when you like. AI answers change from one ask to the next, so a tool that asks the same questions many times gives a steadier picture than one check (how tools measure this).
It suits you if a staff member can edit your website and Google Business Profile, and you already know what customers ask. If nobody acts on the report, you have paid to watch a problem.
Does a local GEO provider or a global GEO tool cover Malaysia better?
A local GEO provider and a global GEO tool can both check Malaysian answers. The real difference is who writes the Malaysian questions and in which languages.
- A global GEO tool can treat Malaysia as a setting. One widely used tool's help pages say it asks AI tools your question exactly as you typed it, as if from your chosen country, in any language. With a tool like that, Malay or Chinese coverage depends on you adding those questions.
- Malaysian providers vary. On the pages we read, two said they work in the languages buyers use. Others offered multilingual work only in their biggest package, charged extra for translation or didn't mention language.
Language matters because the answers can differ. In EasyFound's Malaysian test, of the businesses named for a Malay or Chinese question, 151 of 217 never appeared in the three English answers to the same question. Part of that is ordinary run-to-run change (the language data), but English checks alone didn't show those names. A parent typing "Ada tak klinik gigi dekat Shah Alam yang sabar dengan budak? Anak saya takut doktor gigi" may get a different list from one asking in English.
Which fits my business: GEO software, a GEO agency, a done-for-you service or doing it myself?
The right fit depends mostly on who has time to make changes, then on your customers' languages.
| Your situation | What usually fits |
|---|---|
| No marketer, and no time to spare each month | A done-for-you service |
| A staff member can spend a few hours a month on the website | GEO software |
| You want to see the numbers and raw answers often yourself | GEO software |
| You need many new pages or articles written | A GEO agency with content in its scope |
| Your website is new or simple, and you're just starting | Do the basics yourself first |
| Customers ask in Malay or Chinese | Whichever option checks those languages: ask to see the questions |
A quick check before you choose:
- Who will change the website? If the honest answer is "nobody", rule out software on its own.
- Which languages do your customers ask in? Ask any tool or provider to show you one question in each.
- Daily numbers or a monthly report? Daily tracking is software's strength; a monthly report is the usual service rhythm.
What can't this comparison of GEO agencies and GEO software tell me?
This comparison describes what GEO agencies and software say they do, not how well they do it.
- Results. We read published scopes; we didn't buy any service or tool.
- Change. Scopes change often, so confirm before you sign.
- Our interest. EasyFound is a done-for-you service, so weigh our view accordingly.
How do I choose between a GEO agency and GEO software for my business?
The quickest way to choose is to see where you stand first: the gap shows how much work there is.
- Request EasyFound's free check. See what ChatGPT says about your business, then go through it with us on a free call.
- Count the hours you can give each month. A few hours point to software; none points to a service.
- Ask for a sample report before you pay, and check it lists the questions, AI tools and languages it covers.
EasyFound is the done-for-you kind of GEO help: our team checks six AI tools in English, Malay and Chinese and makes the page fixes by hand, so there's no software to learn. Start with the free check below.

Frequently asked questions
Does GEO software change my website for me?
Usually not. Most GEO software asks AI tools like ChatGPT a set of questions on a schedule, reports which businesses get named and suggests fixes. In the four widely used tools EasyFound read in September 2026, none changed the customer's website, though some tools also draft content. You, a staff member or someone you hire still makes and checks the changes.
What is a done-for-you GEO service?
A done-for-you GEO service checks what AI tools such as ChatGPT say about your business, makes the changes to your pages and listings itself, and reports what moved. You answer questions about your business and give access to your website, but there is no software for you to log in to or learn.
Is a local GEO provider better than a global GEO tool for a Malaysian business?
It depends on languages more than location. The global GEO tool whose help pages EasyFound read lets you set Malaysia as the country and asks each question exactly as you enter it, so Malay or Chinese coverage depends on the questions you add. Malaysian providers vary: a couple said they work in the languages customers use, while others list multilingual work only in their biggest package. Ask either one to show you a question in each language your customers use.
What should a GEO agency deliver each month?
In the Malaysian GEO and AI SEO packages EasyFound read in September 2026, the monthly work was changes to your pages, such as rewritten pages, structured data or new content, plus a report, usually monthly and sometimes quarterly. Ask for the report to list which questions were asked, in which AI tools and languages, and what changed on your site.
Can I use GEO software and a GEO agency together?
Yes, but a small business may end up paying twice for the same checking, because many agencies run their own checks and send a report. Before adding software on top, ask whether the agency's report already shows which questions, AI tools and languages it covers.
