Do Google reviews help my business get recommended by ChatGPT?

EasyFound · · 7 min read

TL;DR

Google reviews help mostly with your customers, not with ChatGPT itself. In EasyFound's September 2026 tally of 153 ChatGPT answers about Malaysian businesses, ChatGPT often searched for reviews and told people to check them, but quoted a specific rating in only 9 answers. People check reviews after ChatGPT recommends someone, so your rating still matters at that step.

Yes, Google reviews help, but mostly in a way you might not expect. ChatGPT rarely repeats your star rating in its answer. What it often does is tell people to go and check your reviews before they choose, so your reviews matter most at the moment a customer decides whether to call you.

In our test of ChatGPT's answers about Malaysian businesses, it told people to check reviews in about one answer in five, but repeated a specific rating in fewer than one in ten. Our test can't tell whether reviews change who ChatGPT recommends. Here's what we saw, and what to do about it.

How often does ChatGPT mention Google reviews when it recommends a business?

ChatGPT mentioned reviews in some way in 53 of our 153 answers. We asked through OpenAI's API with web search and the location set to Malaysia, then read every answer in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese (every answer, coded):

  • 31 answers told readers to check reviews before choosing, 11 of them naming Google reviews specifically.
  • 13 answers justified their picks by reviews ("well-reviewed", "based on guest ratings") without giving a figure.
  • 9 answers quoted a specific rating or review count: 4 of the 18 answers asking for a local business, and 5 of the 135 buying-question answers.

Behind the scenes, ChatGPT's web searches included words like "reviews" or "rated" in 58 answers, and in 11 of the 18 local ones. In every one of those searches, the review word was English ("reviews", "rated"), even when the question was in Malay or Chinese, and none asked for Google reviews by name.

Where did ChatGPT find the ratings it quoted?

Every rating ChatGPT quoted came with a link to a source page. Of the 23 figures quoted, 8 came from Booking.com, 5 were Google ratings, 3 each came from WhatClinic and recommend.my, and 2 each from Agoda and Traveloka.

The 9 ChatGPT answers that quoted a rating, and where each rating came from (EasyFound tally, September 2026)
Question asked What ChatGPT quoted Where it came from
"good dentist in Petaling Jaya" 5.0 from 425 Google reviews A clinic's own website, showing its Google rating
"good dentist in Petaling Jaya" (another run) 5.0 from 957 reviews; 4.7 from 10; 62 reviews; 5.0 from 1 review Google Maps (the 957); the WhatClinic directory (the rest)
"reliable aircon servicing near Puchong" 4.6 to 4.8 out of 5, from 29 to 298 reviews The recommend.my directory
"SPM tuition centre in Cheras" 5.0 from 22 Google reviews A tuition directory showing Google ratings
A cheap but good hotel in George Town (ratings quoted in 3 of 9 runs, English and Malay) 8.1 to 9.4 out of 10 overall, plus one 7.8 cleanliness score Booking.com, Agoda and Traveloka
A renovation company in Kuala Lumpur, asked in Chinese 4.9 out of 5, 259 reviews A Google Business Profile
"best company secretary service in Malaysia" A Google Maps rating of 4.7 Google Maps

Two of the five Google ratings reached ChatGPT through a page other than Google's: a clinic's own site and a directory, each showing the Google figure.

How many Google reviews does my business need for ChatGPT to recommend it?

Our tally can't say how many Google reviews a business needs for ChatGPT to recommend it. The closest example: in one answer about dentists, ChatGPT listed a clinic with 957 Google Maps reviews next to a clinic whose only visible figure was a single review on the WhatClinic directory. We don't know that clinic's Google count, so this doesn't show a Google threshold, but a small visible review count didn't keep it out of the answer.

What the 9 answers do share is that each quoted figure came with a link to a page, so a rating that appears on pages ChatGPT's search finds has a chance of being quoted.

Does ChatGPT read my Google Business Profile directly?

ChatGPT sometimes cites Google Maps, but rarely a Business Profile itself. In our tally, 14 of 153 answers cited a Google Maps or Business Profile page; 12 of those were Google Maps address links, and only 2 were Business Profiles. Across all 482 citations in the 135 buying-question answers, Google Maps and Business Profile listings were 11 (2%).

Google's own AI features are different. Google says Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results"1. For Google's own AI answers, Google says your Business Profile can help you be visible.

Why do Google reviews still matter if ChatGPT rarely quotes them?

Google reviews matter because people check them after ChatGPT recommends someone. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, 97% of the AI users said they sometimes double-check AI recommendations against reviews, and 42% said they always check reviews on the review platform itself2. ChatGPT pushed people the same way: in 31 of our answers, it told them to check reviews before choosing.

A recommendation gets you considered. Your reviews help decide whether the customer calls.

What can't this tally tell me about ChatGPT and Google reviews?

This tally recorded what ChatGPT wrote and searched for, so four things are outside it:

  • Whether reviews change who gets named. We saw what ChatGPT quoted and searched for, not how it ranked businesses.
  • Low ratings. Every overall rating ChatGPT quoted was good (4.6 to 5.0 out of 5, or 8.1 to 9.4 out of 10), so we can't say how it treats a poorly rated business.
  • The ChatGPT app. We used OpenAI's API with web search, location Malaysia and the gpt-5.4-mini model. The app can show local and map results that the API test can't see.
  • Other questions and trades. The 153 answers covered 21 questions across ten trades.

How do I make my Google reviews count with ChatGPT?

Put your rating on pages ChatGPT's search can find, and keep earning reviews for the customers who check.

Where do my reviews give me an advantage with ChatGPT?

Your Google reviews can do more work with ChatGPT than they do now:

  • Your own website. A clinic's own site was the source ChatGPT linked for a 5.0 rating from 425 Google reviews. A rating written as text is easier to quote than one inside a widget.
  • Directories that show ratings as text. WhatClinic, recommend.my and SeekEdu gave ChatGPT figures to quote. A complete, reviewed listing there is worth having.
  • The check after the recommendation. Every customer who checks your reviews after ChatGPT names you is a customer your rating can win or lose.

What should I do first so ChatGPT can see my reviews?

To make your reviews visible to ChatGPT, start with the page, then the listings:

  2. Write your rating on your own site as plain text, such as "4.8 from 120 Google reviews", on your home or services page, and update it monthly.
  3. Complete your listing on the directory for your trade, such as recommend.my or WhatClinic, and ask happy customers to review you there too.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT recommend competitors with fewer Google reviews than me?

ChatGPT doesn't simply pick the business with the most reviews. In one September 2026 answer about dentists, it listed a clinic with 957 Google Maps reviews next to a clinic whose only visible figure was a single review on the WhatClinic directory. A competitor whose page or directory listing turns up in ChatGPT's search can be named alongside you, or instead of you.

Can negative Google reviews stop ChatGPT from recommending my business?

EasyFound's tally can't say: every overall rating ChatGPT quoted in 153 answers was good, 4.6 to 5.0 out of 5 on Google and directories, and 8.1 to 9.4 out of 10 on hotel booking sites. ChatGPT often tells people to check reviews before choosing, so a low rating is likely to cost you at that step even when ChatGPT names you.

Which review sites does ChatGPT cite for local businesses in Malaysia?

In EasyFound's September 2026 tally, the ratings ChatGPT quoted came from Google Maps and Google Business Profiles, directories such as recommend.my, WhatClinic and SeekEdu, hotel booking sites (Booking.com, Agoda and Traveloka), and businesses' own websites showing their Google rating.

Can ChatGPT read the review widget on my website?

Possibly not. Many review widgets load their stars and quotes with JavaScript after the page opens, and AI crawlers such as OpenAI's are reported not to run JavaScript. If you want ChatGPT to quote your rating, write it on the page as text, for example '4.8 from 120 Google reviews', and keep it up to date.
